Re: August Photo Challenge: Drama

NB not an official entry even though it was taken using an Olympus camera and lens: Pen FT and Zuiko 70mm f/2. Having said that the camera has electronics (for the light-meter) so at a push it could...

Re: Pushing Tri-X

Still many great emulsions out there to be sampled. More than you think!

There's a photographer I follow. All B&W using digital. Love the way he destroys the mid tones. In his own words 'F**< the...

Re: Pushing Tri-X

I will look him up.

I'm looking forward to the results, Richard. I'm currently pushing a roll of HP5, but I'm a really slow photographer! As Saul Leiter said: "I'm in no particular hurry".

Re: Pushing Tri-X

Yes, although at least one other Jap camera manufacturer has achieved much higher ISO, in fact I've heard it referred to as an ISO-less camera.

But, that's using ISO to achieve an acceptable...

Re: Pushing Tri-X

Thanks Richard.
I wasn't aware of David Bailey in this regard, but I'm a fan of Ralph Gibson and Bill Brandt, both of whom like the 'soot and whitewash'.
If you're interested in the work of Gibson...

Re: Pushing Tri-X

I push film primarily to squash the mid tones as much as possible, looking for blacks and whites in the subject.

Here's another (all from the same roll).

Re: Political: We're doomed, Captain Mannering...

We should be very careful who we allow to enter the UK, IMO. I have no trouble with the true asylum seeker who wants to integrate fully into our society, to respect our way of life and our laws. One...

Re: Nvidia - fix grainy photos with AI

I suspect I'm being baited here. ;)

I read the title and thought I was going to watch a video about film photography, ie talking about grain.

IMO grain is nice, I like seeing the random...

Re: silent shutter - underexposure

The Oly experts talk about 'blinkies' for under and over exposure warning. It's described in the 'text book' supplied with the camera, in pdf form, as far as I remember.
I would say sod aperture...

Re: 1MK11 off moment

Problem with HLDs and the user firing the shutter inadvertently with the lens hood in place covering the lens. Is that the cause?
Don't think my EM5 will fire if not in focus, however there's a...

Maybe a thread on BoJo and his reference to letter boxes / bank robbers. Should be entertaining.

Re: ISO & Digital Sensors

I prefer using the incident light meter where possible. Some unexpected results using digital, but always spot on when using film.

Re: 1MK11 off moment

Oh dear, it's happened to me on another camera and it's rather annoying, especially when my main interest at the time was street photography. The camera went back to its maker and the error log...

Re: silent shutter - underexposure

It probably does. The camera interprets the light in a way only known to the authors of the algorithm(s) embedded in one or more pieces of silicon, suitably doped.

One of the best investments of...

Re: Pushing Tri-X

Thank you Richard.
All I do is follow the light, click, develop, scan and display - it's very therapeutic. It's nice not to be in a rush.

Re: Pushing Tri-X

For me, reality is fairly boring in photography and I therefore tend towards B&W as an abstraction, further aided by the portrait orientation of the picture (reality is the landscape vision God...

Re: Has the phone killed photography?

Representation of the actual subject in a realistic manner is possibly the most boring thing anyone could do with a camera, IMO (in this context I refer you to post #65)

Re: silent shutter - underexposure

Rob,
Light is a tricky thing! It sounds like the situation is EV 4 or 5 at a guess. I would consider using an incident lightmeter and maybe comparing with a spot reading whilst exposing for shadows....

Re: Has the phone killed photography?

Comparatively the screen offers an inferior experience compared to a silver gelatin print.

But, we're only expressing individual opinions, and as ex Capt. James Blunt once said on a chat show:...
