Re: Streaming music

One I’ve built myself using a Raspberry Pi computer with two 1Tb hard drives. It cost less than £200 and uses about 5W of power so I let it run 24/7. The music player is another RPi running moOde...

Re: I need a fix...

The use of a capacitor to drop the mains voltage is not uncommon but it's not best practice. Some years ago a well known photo retailer sold an enlarger timer that used the same principle and which...

Re: I need a fix...

Given that I live in the middle of nowhere I'm amazed to find there's a repair cafť not half an hour away!

I've always been a bit of a fixer myself, I like repairing things but modern...

Re: Panasonic G VARIO 12-32mm f3.5-5.6 ASPH Mega O.I.S Lens, Black.

The sample I got from Bristol Cameras did not come with a box but do I care? No. I don't remember whether it was advertised as "brand new" or not but it looks new and was a good price. This seems to...

Re: Forum Sill Plagued With Gateway Problems

I haven't had a gateway timeout for ages actually. However experience has taught me that when I'm typing a post to do a ctrl^A ctrl^C now and then to copy it to the clipboard so if something crashes...

Re: So how do you put money in the bank.

I spent well over an hour this afternoon attempting to set up online banking for my elderly sister. HSBC must have the most absurdly complicated process of any bank to do this. Last week we tried to...

Re: Streaming music

It's actually a very grey area. It was illegal in 2015:

An admittedly brief search...

Re: Streaming music

I suppose if you were really keen you could scan the sleeve notes and store them with the music files :). I used to use Last.fm before CBS bought it out and wrecked it, and it was a great way to...

Re: Streaming music

I believe it's technically illegal to copy a CD to another storage medium even for one's own use, in which case probably most of the country are law-breakers!

I've got my homebrew music streamer...

Re: Bit Rot

What's in the image doesn't affect how long it lasts, which was the original premise. Unless of course somebody takes exception to it and rips up the print!
Photographs have always been manipulated,...

Re: Bit Rot

I quite agree about negatives Steve, I keep mine in archival sleeves and boxes. I was thinking more of digital photos, if you print them they'll always be accessible however the technology changes....

Re: Bit Rot

The best way to preserve your photos is to make prints and keep them in a dark drawer!

Re: A heads up

I agree, Windows 10 is much better than it used to be. I don't get too many notifications, and those that I do get usually refer to software upgrades. It seems a solid and reliable OS now, and I've...

Re: Millennial Snowflake Burnout?

I'm not an Apple fanboy by any stretch of the imagination but my iPhone "just works" and I'm happy that it does. I don't use any other Apple products and only use the free bytes that iCloud offers to...

Further to my post above regarding Windows 10 File Sharing, I found this video on YouTube, followed it to the letter, and now all three talk nicely to one another. Whether they still will after today...

Re: Tits Nest

OK, how do I check the EXIF data? I downloaded the first pic and the only lens info is 364mm, f/6.3. I assume there's a way of checking via the Gallery but that is, as usual, rather arcane! I guess...

Using Apple Pay presumably. I have heard the Apple Watch can be used for that but I've never seen it in action. My iPhone has Apple Pay set up but I've never used that either. It is the future,...

I still prefer to have a physical CD but that said I am in the process of ripping my CD collection to .FLAC files using Exact Audio Copy (http://www.exactaudiocopy.de/). I have built a music player...
