Re: Communal flowers, trees, plants and fungi thread

I have much the same feeling towards insects that have failed to emerge cleanly and have a bent or malformed wing. They deserve our attention as much as the perfect. Several artists would only paint...

I feel your closeness has given a real quality to the images and it shows great...

Re: Plasterer Bee Colletes hederae via Lumix Leica 100-400mm

I am impressed by these shots Harold. That is a lens I would be interested in when the servicing is improved by Panasonic. I'd like to try it alongside their 50-200. Macro is good in many situations...

Re: Suffolk selection

Hi Phill,

All very nice memories. I used to drive through several of them whilst I was working and you have done them proud. I think I stayed in the Swan, at a work event, it was very nice. :)

Re: Communal Dragonfly, Butterfly and Insect photo thread

It is strange, we all have our fear/ughhh trigger points. I am fine with picking up spiders and many types of insects. However, with Grasshoppers, crickets and dragonflies I'm not so keen. And in...

Re: Communal Dragonfly, Butterfly and Insect photo thread

Alf and Harold

As a long time Hornet fan these are all lovely. Not so keen on wasps but they have there moments. I see hornets have reached Yorkshire so the slow warming will eventually bring them...

Re: Communal Dragonfly, Butterfly and Insect photo thread

All this talk of hornet poop made me go and find my pictures from June, and just a couple which show the less gory latter stages (wings and legs and other unwanted bits chopped and dropped).

The...

Re: Communal Dragonfly, Butterfly and Insect photo thread

I appreciate it isn't poop, but I believed frass was also used for the leftovers from wood-borers - which I guess is also not excreted. I simply extended that to apple boring. A step too far *chr

Re: Communal Dragonfly, Butterfly and Insect photo thread

Well I've tried with books and on the ipad and on the desktop and apart from eyes watering and everything going out of focus I fail.

And now apparently I have the start of a cataract in one eye,...

Re: Communal Dragonfly, Butterfly and Insect photo thread

Harold

A wonderful opportunity, well taken. Especially like number two. Love the pile of frass.

I always stop for hornets and try to catch them in flight as they attack other insects. I spent a...

Re: To flash or not

Well I prefer the ambient light, more especially in the second shot. It is very personal, and I suspect you'll get a mix of preferences. They are all quite nice.

I have found a daylight balanced...

Harold, I am sending off for a modern stereo pair viewer. I have always wanted to see your stereos properly. The grasshoppers made my mind up. I hope to report back a success and then I can go back...

Re: Communal Dragonfly, Butterfly and Insect photo thread

It was in the Velebit mountains in Croatia. I will do some googling and see if I can find a name and size details. Nobody on the trip was any help on spiders. :(

Re: Male Long-winged Conehead Bush Cricket

Aberrations were an obsession of Victorian/Edwardian lepidopterists. Whole colonies collected and displayed in the cabinet of curiosities. But this year I have had more than my share. The Small...

Re: Male Long-winged Conehead Bush Cricket

Hi Harold
I was similar. I use SAF + MF for 95% of my shots. With our subjects the precision of focus is the critical issue along with framing and behaviour.

But, what I have found useful in...

Re: Male Long-winged Conehead Bush Cricket

I'm not trying to sell one over the other. For me, I like tools to work quite simply and this does that better than the way I had been before.

An example is 6K photo mode. A bit like Olympus's...

Re: Male Long-winged Conehead Bush Cricket

I posted a picture of a an owlfly in the communal insect forum ( http://e-group.uk.net/forum/showpost.php?p=454610&postcount=2266 ) rather than here as that seemed to be more appropriate.

A short...
