Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2017-18

Visited this today at the Natural History Museum in London: well up to its usual stunning standard in my humble opinion. They've maintained the trend in recent years seemingly to favour pictorial and...

Re: What sort of word is that?"

I guess it’s part of being human to generalise from frankly fairly small and superficial details we all notice within our own experience and we all generalise. It’s often not healthy, and risks...

Re: What sort of word is that?"

Well, who knows: welcome to the complete unknown. Maybe in 10 - 15 years time all will be fine and dandy, just so long as the NHS/Social Care/State Pension etc etc have miraculously survived in the...

Re: What sort of word is that?"

Returning delicately to the (probably now neutral) subject of Canada, Kate and I had a great holiday last October in Quebec Province.

We flew in and out of Montreal, a buzzing, cosmopolitan,...

Re: Nasty "PayPal" Phishing Email

Quite right about wasting all that money on a watch: the correct price is $99.99

Re: Worst Passwords Enjoy:of the Year 2017

When I first started in the clinical lab at St Thomas’ in 1981 I had to choose a password for the departmental system, and obviously went for fu2.

About 5 years later they upgraded security and...

Re: Peak district book

Indeed.

Went to Yosemite last year and tried very hard to come up with some non-clichéd compositions (as well as the hackneyed ones, of course!). I put a couple of quite unusual ones in 2...

Re: Peak district book

I've actually got 'The Photographer's Guide to the Peak District' by E Bowness: I've used it quite a bit on my 3 most recent trips and have found it useful when combined with an OS map and several...

Re: What sort of word is that?"

There is actually some proper scientific medical evidence to support the use of mindfulness in some specific applications for a couple of illnesses.

Not surprisingly, however, it has been taken...

Re: What comes between 12 and 30?

Yeah. I've had 'zoom anxiety' on the plane over to European city breaks when I've been carrying just one camera body with a 35mm-ish prime.

However, in retrospect I don't think I've ever regretted...

Re: Bag for Pen F and 12mm, 25mm & 45mm primes

paul's is a good choice I think (although not having a Pen-F).

You might try one of the SubUrban Disguise bags as an alternative, which I suspect would give a bit of extra room for...

Re: This or That?

Great.

Relying only on memory of the 21mm but recent experience with the 24mm on my full-frame Sonys, I'd suspect that stone fence was indeed with the 24, mainly from the depth of field.

Re: Viewing RAW images in Windows 10 Explorer

Quite apart from Oly bringing out new cameras, I find that every now and again MicroSoft issues an update to Win10 that breaks various things, including the ability to see orfs in Explorer.

Every...

Re: Panasonic 8-18mm

Yes, me too! Unfortunately this photographer's carrying capability has reduced since those days.

I am wondering about the 8-18/7-14/Laowa 7.5 equation.

If Oly made a reasonably compact...

Re: Panasonic 8-18mm

Pretty much anything that wide would flare like that under those conditions, and many would do worse I suspect.

Tempting: I do love the optical performance of the 7-14 f2.8, but I hate carrying it...

Re: Viewing RAW images in Windows 10 Explorer

You can certainly see them in FastStone, but you need the codecs to see them in Explorer (as far as I'm aware, anyway).

Cracking shot, David

Yet more evidence that you can't take a worthwhile wildlife image on m4/3 because of noise & limited dynamic range :D

Re: Robert Frank film screening in London

Understood!
It's only just over an hour on the train for me, and an offpeak advance return is dirt cheap for us old gits.

His work is the sort of thing that only makes sense as part of a series...
