Thanks for that. I couldn't get that far, as the "updater" says that the product code (the one on the multi-coloured sticker on the machine) is for an OEM installed system and cannot be updated. ...

Windows 8 - Actually I don't have that much of an issue with W8 as I run it from the desktop just as I do W7. The biggest problem is when it goes into "update" for ages.

A, not so old, laptop running windows 8, can't be updated as the product key is, according to MS "autobot", for the system installed by the manufacturer and I have to get an update from...

I now only ever do clean installs. Upgrades are always problematical.
