I bought a copy many years ago and used it with a Minolta Film scanner. It worked well. It is updated regularly and works with virtually any scanner.

You could try it out with the free trial.

I would suggest trying your 100-400mm at 300mm where it will be f5.7 and allow your ISO to go higher, even up to 3200 if necessary. Also for Barn Owls you can dial in at least -1 exposure...

I've had mine since it was introduced and it's been fine. The only thing I have noticed is that it gave a bit of front focus with the 300/4 and needed a +5 AF adjustment.

That is the best way to get round distance - have a good sized flock of birds. One on its own cropped would not look much. Think you've got a couple of Dunlin in there too.
