Re: Political: Time for the little guy ?

This thread seems to have rapidly degenerated into Monty Python's "Four Yorkshiremen" sketch! Yeah, we lived in't shoebox in t'middle o't'road :D. Meanwhile I feel very much a youngster here; I'm...

Re: Political: Time for the little guy ?

Well, I will admit to being retired (just!) but I don't appreciate being called a dinosaur. Our shops are two minutes walk away and the prices are reasonable enough to make it pointless spending an...

Re: Political: Time for the little guy ?

I still shop for food most days. No vast supermarkets within 45mins drive of here but we have most of what we need in the shops on the doorstep. We have a proper independent butcher whose local...

Re: Political: Time for the little guy ?

Another thing that drives me nuts is the dumbing down of almost everything to extraordinary levels of puerility. I have just been forced to upgrade (sic) Skype from v7 to v8 and now there's a big...

Re: Political: Time for the little guy ?

Since most of these big businesses have got big through economies of scale and thus lower prices, and everybody wants something for (next to) nothing, I think we have only ourselves to blame, but I...

Re: Anyone print A3 ?

The Epson 3880 (and its predecessor the 3800 which I own) were cut-down versions of the 4800. This had a roll paper adaptor and cutter. I don't know what the maximum size it could print though,...

Re: Half ar-ed email from Olympus

Affinity Publisher is supposed to be to InDesign what Affinity Photo is to Photoshop, and Affinity Designer is to Adobe Illustrator (i.e. a vector graphics editor).

I think InDesign is similar to...

Re: Half ar-ed email from Olympus

I cut my DTP teeth on PageMaker. I believe it eventually got bought out by Adobe. It was silly money at the time so for home use I bought Serif PagePlus v1.0 which was an attempt to do PageMaker on a...

Re: Half ar-ed email from Olympus

I remember the lorem ipsum stuff from the early 1980s when desktop publishing was just starting to appear. The Aldus PageMaker user manual was full of it!

Re: Political: We're doomed, Captain Mannering...

An independent opinion from another country not involved on either side is worth listening to. The trouble with UK residents' opinions is that they are coloured because they are directly involved....

Re: Political: We're doomed, Captain Mannering...

An interesting piece in the New York Times:

https://www.nytimes.com/2019/01/15/opinion/brexit-vote-second-referendum.html

"There are no good solutions to the current impasse but a second ...

Re: Invisible Mode

T'aint me neither. I assume the default setting for a new user is "off", and if somebody deliberately turned it on they're not likely to tell us are they!

Re: Political: We're doomed, Captain Mannering...

On another forum someone pointed out that the referendum was for a simple in or out. Remainers knew exactly what they wanted which was the status quo, whereas leavers were unable to specify exactly...

Re: Escape from the Heatwave

I have a friend who lives an hour or so north of Sydney and he is sweltering right now with temperatures in the 40s. I might suggest he joins you - it's 40s here too, but Fahrenheit :). That's one...

It's called "confirmation bias (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Confirmation_bias)" I think.

Re: How are we going to save the planet?

To answer the question - no, I don't think it is fundamentally, though there may well be a lot of people with agendas trying to prove otherwise. Oil companies for example. The problem with all these...

Re: How are we going to save the planet?

Thanks. He may well be scientifically trained but that doesn't qualify him to pose as an "expert" on a field which he has not specialised. I was trained in engineering, but in electronics so I...

Re: How are we going to save the planet?

Dave, would you like to summarise what he says as I don't have time to listen to him drone on for over half an hour. There will always be climate change deniers just as there's still a Flat Earth...

"The PM visited Portmeirion pottery factory in Stoke-on-Trent, an area ...

Re: Lens recommendation

I have the 30mm Olympus macro lens, I haven't used it much but it seems pretty good. The working distance is short though so not so good for bugs etc - at least not live ones!

Re: Political: We're doomed, Captain Mannering...

That's wine strength, not beer! *chr

I think the strongest beer I've tasted was a BrewDog one at around 11%, it wasn't bad but I'm not a fan of gassy beers. One of the most memorable beers I ever...

Re: Political: We're doomed, Captain Mannering...

I still haven't forgiven Greed King for the loss of Rayment's, and Ruddles County just tastes like Abbott to me now.

I visited East Berlin before the Wall came down and it was indeed pretty grim....
