Re: Strange 'phone calls!

I've had the occasional call from a number which appears to be from my local exchange as it starts with the same 5-digit 01nnn code. But the sixth digit was 7 and there are no numbers with the local...

Re: A day in the diary of a BMW driver

Me too, and the Cortina was one of the worst cars I've ever driven. It took forever to get it started in the winter, and if you needed to brake suddenly you never knew whether you'd end up in the...

Re: Windows 10 raw image viewer

This old Dell spent about four hours updating itself to v1903 this afternoon and, once again, my Epson scanner software has been deleted and all my multimedia file associations reset to open with the...

Extendable lenses, filters and lens caps

I think some of you have an aversion to extendable lenses which I can understand to an extent as it's irritating to see "the lens is locked - please extend the lens" message at just the wrong time. ...

Re: Honestly, do you like autofocus?

Velvia 50 is a tricky film to use as it's so high in contrast and its palette is so saturated. With the right subject it's wonderful stuff but it can be prone to a magenta cast. Trying to print...

Re: Honestly, do you like autofocus?

There's blue everywhere on my screen too. If the bench and leaves were wet (which they look) I can see why the sky would cause that effect but given it's all in the shade anyway I'd have used an 81...

Re: Honestly, do you like autofocus?

The colour in the second one is definitely weird. Fujichrome Velvia 50 by any chance?

AF and other aids don't necessarily "improve" results, but they make getting good (technically, at least)...

Re: Transport

Transporter bridges have always intrigued me but there aren't many left in the world now. The Newport one is up and running, I visited it just a couple of years ago, and there is a unique rail...

Re: Honestly, do you like autofocus?

AF is valuable when the viewfinder doesn't have any focussing aids (microprism etc) and your eyes are getting old like mine.

Re: 10 Hour Working Week

A friend of mine bought a new exhaust system for her VW Polo from KwikFit. It came with a lifetime guarantee, valid for as long as she owned the car. They didn't know she was going to own it for...

Re: 10 Hour Working Week

I've had my Russell Hobbs K2R kettle for probably forty years or more and I wouldn't swap it for any of the modern plastic rubbish. I have an esspresso machine for making coffee but on the odd...

Re: Noise issues

I was under the impression that safety-critical systems had to be implemented in triplicate and the final decision made on a "best of three" principle?

Re: 40-150 Pro vs. 50-200 SWD

In fairness to the SWD would it not be better to test it on one of the newer mFT bodies rather than the E3 used in the Lenstip tests?

Re: 40-150 Pro vs. 50-200 SWD

On my screen I can't tell a difference at all Mark, so in what way do you think the Pro is better? The Pro possibly has a slightly higher contrast?

Re: Coverdale Barn

Thanks all for the comments. Actually I took several shots but this was the first and imho the best; the lone tree works well whereas I included a few more in the other shots - in retrospect a...

Here's a slightly less sensationalist article from the Guardian on the same study:
