Re: Hand held hi res - It's fabulous !

I forgot all about the new EVF optics when I went to try and it was only after I had left the shop that I realized that I hadn't noticed any difference!

Re: E-M1X preview sessions

Well, I thought the weight was okay whilst I was holding the body only. Then I thought it was a bit heavy once I'd attached the 300mm. it's 5.5 lbs vs 4.5lbs for the MkII and I did notice the...

Re: New Olympus OMD - EM1X ?

I agree. I pretty much only use all points for the situations that you described. But maybe the E-M1X is better in this respect.

There are a couple of new settings on the E-M1X too:

C-AF...

Re: New Olympus OMD - EM1X ?

The Motorbike Test

I have had a look at the motorbike test in the same Japanese review. This one used small single point in the centre and was shot at f/7.1 with the 300mm f/4. Most of the time,...

Re: New Olympus OMD - EM1X ?

Acceptable sharpness does depend very much on how you are viewing the image and conventional circle of confusion calculations make assuptions about that. With my wildlife shots, I find that I am...

Re: New Olympus OMD - EM1X ?

The graphs plotted with StepCount are not greatly different to those in metres, other than the left axis being reversed. Although FocusStepCount is very much not a linear relationship to distance,...

Re: New Olympus OMD - EM1X ?

StepCount is the poistion of the focus elements in terms of focus motor steps. I assume that 1 step is the smallest incremental move that the lens can make. It is essentially the internal units by...

Re: New Olympus OMD - EM1X ?

Just for completeness, here are the data for the three Heron examples giving frame number, FocusDistance and FocusStepCount.

Example A

26 60.715 2193

Re: New Olympus OMD - EM1X ?

The reported focus distances may not be accurate in absolute terms but they are in relative terms between frames and they do corrolate directly with a related parameter called FocusStepCount. My...

Re: New Olympus OMD - EM1X ?

That's a great review with good examples. Well found!

I downloaded the C-AF test example sequences of the herons flying and luckily, they contain the full Exif. As I am interested in whether the...

Re: New Olympus OMD - EM1X ?

I am somewhat shocked to see that the 25-point AF group is listed as a differentiator between the E-M1 MkII and the E-M1X which suggests that they are not even going to give us that in a firmware...

Unhappy Re: New Olympus OMD - EM1X ?

Jebus! Not nearly as revolutionary as I was expecting. No real song and dance about the C-AF system. Many things seem to be the same as the MkII.

Call me puzzled.

But lets hope...

Re: A Question about Image Stabilization

One conclusion that I have come to for bif is that focus accuracy trumps almost everything else. This has a number of implications:

The camera focuses better with a faster maximum aperture...

Re: A Question about Image Stabilization

Unfortunately, this seems to be the case. Like you I wanted to save the IS setting in a custom set so that it was automatically switched off for bif. In this situation, having a physical IS switch is...

I don't know the answer to your question but I would like to. ;)

However, I have another related question that I would also like to know the answer to. That is - how and when does the camera...

Re: C-AF - tight/loose

That's not quite what I meant. Your test shows that there is a delay when you deliberately move the camera between subjects at different distances. That is not something that I try to do in my...

Re: C-AF - tight/loose

What we don't seem to know is how the C-AF Sensitivity setting affects the ability of the camera to keep a moving subject in focus. Some say +2 is more accurate. My experience is it doesn't make any...

Re: Loving the new small focus point

I think the small focus point works even better than it did on the MkI. It seems verry reliable, fast and accurate. Very odd that they took it away for the launch.

Re: Firmware Update

Thanks for the comments. Yes, it is the 300mm f/4 @f/4.5 and 1/2000th at Iso 400. The image is cropped to 2870 x 1913 so about 50% crop.

Re: Firmware Update

I am very pleased with the C-AF in the new firmware. It appears to be much more accurate than before which, after all, is the most important characteristic of any AF system.

Here's a shot from...
