Re: Another big loss to the UK

Well we did start off talking about music, and the pipe organ is THE undisputed King of musical instruments.

The science behind music also has many applications in engineering, which brings us...

Re: Another big loss to the UK

Now, if you were a real Anorak Keith you would know about the The National Pipe Organ Register website (NPOR) (http://www.npor.org.uk/) which has details and specifications of virtually every pipe...

Re: Another big loss to the UK

I think you'll find Macey's is the biggest, fully functioning organ in the world. The Atlantic City instrument is not in full working order, so it doesn't really count. :)

However, as far as I...

Re: Another big loss to the UK

Thanks for the link Keith. I shall investigate. :)

The biggest working pipe organ in the world is the Wannamaker installed in Macey's store in Philadelphia with six manuals and 28,750 pipes in...

Re: Another big loss to the UK

I suppose in many ways pipe organs are quite crude, but it is an ancient technology, and if it works then why fix it?

As far as I know, metal organ pipes are made from various alloys of lead, tin...

Re: Another big loss to the UK

Mander is not that well known outside of the organ world, but highly respected within it. Mander's website can be found here (https://mander-organs.com/), and contains a lot of useful information.

Re: Another big loss to the UK

As you will have learned by now, the older they are (organists that is) the worse they get! *yes

Some seem to cling to the bench for dear life; and usually well past their 'best before' date. The...

Re: Another big loss to the UK

Pleased to have been of help Derek.

There are a few organ builders around the country, and all seem to be thriving.

Electronic instruments now fulfil the needs of many, especially where cost...

Re: The Bigger They Are.....

I think that particular hat would fit a lot of people John, but they are not all fat and ugly.

One who comes to mind is very short, but no less odious, and will often be seen at GP circuits.

Re: Another big loss to the UK

Thank you Keith. Not only is this very funny but also entirely believable. Nothing like village politics eh? :)

The irony is that it gets worse as the building gets bigger. Our son was due to...

Re: Another big loss to the UK

Yes, that is irritating, especially when the tenor of advertisements consistently disrupt the enjoyment of music. I gave up on Spotify for the same reason.

At least the BBC Third Programme...

Re: As a certain arty-farty might say…

The BBC, like the NHS, will never have enough money.

Which raises the question; why does the BBC need to pay Chris Evans £2.5 million a year for his infantile drivel?

That equates to 17,250...

Re: Another big loss to the UK

To be fair, Classic FM improves a lot in the evenings, when I guess they are not competing so much for the mass market. There are also very few advertisements at this time.

I particularly enjoy...

Re: As a certain arty-farty might say…

Pinning our hopes on the USA as a trading partner is a recipe for disaster. The Americans only ever do what is in Americas best interests. The current debacle with Boeing and Bombardier should leave...

Re: Grey Imports

If you buy a camera body from Amazon the chances are that your order will be fulfilled from one of their European warehouses, (usually Germany) so it will be grey import in all but name and price.

Re: Another big loss to the UK

Yes; Rodrigo's Concierto Aranjuez and Elgar Cello Concerto seem to be repeated on the hour, every hour, along with individual movements of Rachmaninov II and that Widor!

All of this is good music...

Re: Quick reminder: The Lounge is for non-photography topics!

But John, there is a big difference between expressing an opinion and issuing orders to other members. That is what I was objecting to.

I would submit that your comment (I quote) "IF YOU DON'T...

Re: Quick reminder: The Lounge is for non-photography topics!

Thank you Chris. My sentiments entirely.

The recent rants on this thread and others are totally unnecessary and do nothing to promote harmony.

Re: Life as a "Lefty"

My Sony Z3 has a superb camera, with 22 MP output. The only thing that spoils it is excessive Jpeg compression, which is completely unnecessary given the ready availability of 64 GB and even 128 GB...

Re: Life as a "Lefty"

Agreed; but there also has to be an element of compromise, as well as thought given to how the images will be viewed.

I would still argue that for optimum quality a 6 x 7 film camera is difficult...

Re: Wedding Photographer recommendations please

I paid for their Professional service, which meant that each image was opened in Photoshop and adjusted as required. (I wasn't offered a profile.)

However, what happened from there was that they...
