Re: Digitial vs Film - a real-world comparison

I tried using a macro lens and bellows arrangement for slide copying using my E-M5 MkI and a Zuiko 50mm f/3.5 macro lens. It's much quicker than using a scanner but the results are inferior to my...

Re: Another big loss to the UK

That rings a bell Jim, thanks. I have that programme on an old VHS tape somewhere I think but as my VCR hasn't been used since before I moved here eleven years ago I doubt it will ever play again!

Re: Another big loss to the UK

I'm sure I saw a guy featured on TV some years ago who had a Mighty Wurlitzer built into his house!

Re: Ended AP

Now that cameras do everything for us apart perhaps from actual composition, there is little to be discussed in a magazine. Forty years ago when I used to read AP occasionally it was a different...

Re: Black and white and arty

It's to do with gamma which I think is sometimes different in a browser than in other apps. Photoshop for instance has its own gamma setting. It also explains why prints often come out darker than...

Re: Another big loss to the UK

O dear Jim, that's one of my favourite pieces! It's Mozart that drives me nuts. Classic FM was good in its early days when even the ads had classical music, but now it has descended into just...

Re: M10 Mark III review

The OM-10s were prone to sticky magnet syndrome I believe, but I've still got mine and it still works (or it did last time I looked!). I bought one when they first came out because I couldn't afford...

Re: DxO Pro 11 - which files do you keep and other questions?

All you really need to keep is the RAW file and the .dxo file. The latter contains all your post-processing steps so you can regenerate a jpg or other file type (e.g. tiff) at any time. DxO does not...

Re: M10 Mark III review

If I remember correctly when DAB was launched Radio 3 was 256kb/s but has now dropped to 192kb/s. Radio 3's "HD Sound" via the Internet is (I think) 320kb/s AAC; AAC is a much more efficient...

Re: M10 Mark III review

DAB is ancient technology now, it still uses mp2 compression. I have given up on it for hi-fi, only Radio 3 has anything like a decent bit rate but listen to some (for example) complex choral music...

Re: The Peugeot Diesel Pollutant Saga

I do wonder about some car dealerships. A colleague of mine once went to our local Volvo dealer to have a look at a car only to be confronted by a somewhat toffee-nosed salesman who asked whether...

Re: Electric Car Charging Restrictions?

Whatever happened to the battery-powered milk float? As for prophets of doom, don't forget that until the infernal combustion engine began to catch on, they were predicting that London would be...

Re: Sorry, You Were Out

I guess it has a lot to do with the individual drivers but my local DPD driver always turns up within the stated one-hour time slot, sometimes on the dot of the start time! Not long ago I received a...

Re: The Peugeot Diesel Pollutant Saga

I am becoming increasingly relieved that I swapped my one and only diesel for the petrol equivalent! (Ask me again when the MultiAir unit fails, although I am assured that was confined to early...

Re: The Peugeot Diesel Pollutant Saga

In the case of my car, it's simply the transmission electronics not reacting correctly to a low voltage (I assume). That could surely be fixed in software at no cost - simply disable the transmission...

Re: The Peugeot Diesel Pollutant Saga

You might - and that software engineers might have learnt a bit about watchdogs! It shouldn't be difficult to design a system that recovers from a voltage dip properly. Having said that, certain...

Re: The Peugeot Diesel Pollutant Saga

That's quite possible, it only seems to happen from a cold start. The battery voltage measures 12.2v which I would have thought was perfectly fine, though of course it will dip significantly during...

Re: The future for our cameras?

In my view the smartphone camera is the modern equivalent of the Instamatic, the sort of basic camera that everyone uses to take snaps. Enthusiasts use SLRs and still will I think. ("SLR" includes...

Re: The Peugeot Diesel Pollutant Saga

I knew it. I should have kept my mouth shut. Started the engine this morning. "Check transmission" light and warning beep, and car isn't going anywhere.

Fortunately at the third attempt it went...

Re: The Peugeot Diesel Pollutant Saga

That may have been true once upon a time but it isn't any more. And with the new Giulia and Stelvio Alfa has reinvented itself. It's time to shake off that undeserved reputation.

Re: The Peugeot Diesel Pollutant Saga

A mate of mine had a Peugeot 205GTi for years and loved it. It had done around 200k miles when he finally got rid of it but it was always needing some major job or other doing. When my sister was...

Re: Lexar fans shpould be OK.

My sister has an HP Envy of some sort and it seems to work very well, but their web site refuses to allow us to log in and complete the setup. But it does what she wants it to do. I had a LaserJet 5L...

Re: Wastwater on a quiet morning

Lovely shots Alf, no.2 for me but by a very short head. I'm envious of you living so close to one of my favourite places, it's a couple of hours away for me.

Re: Lexar fans shpould be OK.

I won't touch HP either now. Sad, because HP was a very highly respected company in the 70s and 80s.

Let's hope Lexar survives - although most of my cards are Sandisk!
