Re: Fieldcraft for Wildlife Photography

I don't know if you can learn fieldcraft on a photo forum, you learn it by being out in the field. One important aspect is being a good naturalist, learn to observe the subjects behavior and body...

Re: Fieldcraft for Wildlife Photography

It depends on what you mean by camouflaged. If hidden in a hide yes, if looking like an ad for your local army surplus shop then no. Most wildlife isn't fooled by a human in camouflage unless you...

Re: Researching The 75-300

You could always use the trick a couple of Canon users I know use. Buy three and return the worst two. Of course, that's L glass, you may not get the same sample variation with cheap Olympus glass.

Re: Is it mid life crisis

There's a few lenses missing from that list. And two more manual focus primes were "leaked" today. The forthcoming 35mm f/1.2 sounds interesting, I've found 35mm a nice long standard and the f/1.2 is...

Re: Is it mid life crisis

I'm pretty much totally manual focus these days. The only lens I use with auto focus is the 7-14 as the focus by wire is so crappy.

And probably 95% of my personal work is with manual focus...

Re: Communal Bird Photography Thread

Ron, a friend posted a very nice shot of a murmuration over the burnt-out pier at Brighton on Instagram today. There is some nice colour in the sky being picked up by the sea.

Re: Monday morning at Tewet tarn

First and last for me.

The third photo is likely to start me on a rant about billing airlines for their contrails spoiling your shots.

Re: No MFT 2x TC

Because there's no fast glass to make use of one.

What pdk42 said although I'd clone out the white spot bottom left edge of the frame.

Re: Magnus Maggie Earnt his Wings

Having seen a couple of Snow Buntings this morning it got me thinking about their endurance. I remember a flock flying past me to roost at sunset in Saskatchewan in the winter when it was -40 and...

Re: Magnus Maggie Earnt his Wings

Interesting, by their body and bill shape I was thinking that they were related to the American Blackbirds and Orioles but they're not.

Re: Dead Letter Box ?

Oh, purely theoretical. If I want to hide something I'll blog about it. :D

Or post on Instagram where I've upset Olympus America and Tenba Bags so far. :D

Re: Dead Letter Box ?

So is it better to use PM on here where there's a low membership so the whole forum could fly under the radar or somewhere like faecebook where there's millions of users for the security services to...

Re: Wildlife macro - the trade-offs

I don't discriminate, I make myself unpopular with photographers and birders by taking the piss out of them equally.

After a certain amount of piss taking the photo editor of one of the UK birding...

Re: Banded centipede Lithobius variegatus

I don't know if you came across House Centipedes in Canada but they're huge and fast with very long legs. I still avoid killing them, catch and release outside but sometimes they're to fast to catch.

Re: Interference Fringes?

IIRC some editing software handles moire better than other packages. Maybe try a different editor.

And I seem to think that you can still get moire using a camera with an AA filter.

Re: Banded centipede Lithobius variegatus

Centipedes never bothered me until I came across the House Centipede in Canada. Those things give me the creeps.

Re: Wildlife macro - the trade-offs

Not only does it make the Owls reliant on "hand outs" but some photographers will do it close to roads increasing the risk of the bird getting hit by a vehicle.

Why trek through the snow when you...

Re: Wildlife macro - the trade-offs

I suspect not. Being taken from a warm pet shop to be thrown out onto a snow covered area I suspect that any that escape the Owl wouldn't live long.

Still, as long as you get a shot like the 100...

Re: Wildlife macro - the trade-offs

But fairly easy to spot a lot of the time for anyone experienced at shooting natural history subjects. It's one reason l'm not popular on some of the nature photography forums.

There's another row...
