Options available?

When I do get our and about with my camera, other than family trips where I find the 40-150 f2.8 has me covered, I enjoy taking wildlife pics but as I found last night (trying to get pics of barn owls and little owls) that I need a fast lens but with good reach - I was using the 40-150 with 1.4 tele and found reach wise I was lacking.

I currently have the 100-400 Panasonic, but at f6.3 there's no way I could get the speed in the light.

So what options do I have?

Cheap option is get closer, but these owls, for example, are in someone's back garden and whilst he'll allow me to take pics from the house he won't let me setup in his back garden.

Was looking at legacy options zuiko 250, 350 etc but not sure what I'd need to use these on my em1 MK2 and also worried about the weight.

Any help appreciated.

As soon as you say you don't want weight, there really is only the 300mm f/4

However there are some that have used the very long Sigma lens, but that too is heavy.

Hi,

I think I realise that I am going to have to go down a heavy lens but just not sure which way to jump until explored all avenues.

The sigma looks good but is f6.3 same as my panasonic 100-400 and was wanting something f4 max - the 40-150 f2.8 with tele is f4 and I was struggling with ISO 800 and the failing light.

Guess the only real option is to go zuiko and lump the lens around, just wondered if there was something inbetween weight wise?

Just look at photos here on the forum with the Oly 300mm + TC1.4.....

That's your best option alas. I have the Panasonic 100-400, and do find the F stop a bit high......................

Oly 300mm is definitely on the list..................:confused::confuse d:

I would suggest trying your 100-400mm at 300mm where it will be f5.7 and allow your ISO to go higher, even up to 3200 if necessary. Also for Barn Owls you can dial in at least -1 exposure compensation to keep the shutter speed up.

The 300 is great, but with the TC it's f5.6 - that's only half at stop better than the Panasonic 100-400 at similar focal lengths. The only real solution is more light - flash or such like.

Or the 4/3 300mm f/2.8.

And a sherpa to carry it :D

Re: Options available?

I think I'll end up swapping out the 100-400 for the 300 f4, I have the teleconvertor if needed as well.

I guess the 300 f4 is the step to take at the moment - if a further step is required then it's either old school lens or a full frame with monster lens and a sherpa.
