Hard to Swallow (SIF)

This morning by One Mile Creek I watched Welcome Swallows flying erratically as they hoovered up insects out of thin air.
My shoot began with a serendipitous moment when one perched a few metres away on a strand of barbed wire, Click, Click, Click!
Iíve tried catching their aerial foraging several times over the years, but never succeeded until today. Swallows fly at speeds of up to 10/mps, (20mph).

This is how it went:

Camera set up - M5 Mkii, AE mode 1/8000sec, F6.3, Continuous 10 fps, 73.0 mm (35 mm equivalent: 146.2 mm) , ISO 1000,
Technique: Panned 'from the hip' in the general direction of target, hoping it was in-frame; some were, most werenít, which was hard to swallow. *sob

Three consecutive images at 10/fps, shows wing configuration over a time lapse of 3/10 of a second.

You nailed the first two. Shooting from the hip sounds a bit tricky, not tried that!
Can you set the focus range in the 5mkii? In the EM1 you can set the focus distance limits so it won't fire unless something is in focus in that range. Good if the thing your shooting is small and you need it to be within close range to get a good shot. Doesn't help with the aim though!

Must try that shooting from the hip #2 is a cracker. Maybe just shutting my eyes would help too! :)
That last sequence is great too, presumably well cropped and really high iso. I think I'd have hit the delete key but with the colours and the sequence you've elevated it to a very worthy post. Nicely done.

Like the sequence shots in the last three.
Those little birds are fast close up well done.

The phrase 'shooting from the hip' in this context means not using the EVF, as due to its speed and erratic flight pattern it would be impossible to keep track of the bird in frame. If the M5 Mkii is capable of shooting within preset focus parameters, then I'm not aware of it. Set on ESP, I figured the best bet was to try to keep the lens trained on the bird's convoluted aerobatics. You'd have to be good to shoot this bird at close range in flight. A couple of times it flew within a few feet of me at high speed before executing unpredictable acute angle turns - good bloody luck, mate! *chr

Thanks Phill, "Maybe just shutting my eyes would help too!", I like that! :D Yes, the individual files comprising the triptych serve only to illustrate the changed wing configuration over 3/10ths of a second, flying at around 20mph. When your late spring / early summer returns you should give the Swallows a try, it's a worthy challenge.

Thanks Dave, not only fast but erratic to boot!

Fast little things but much easier when they are still hence #1 is a great shot.

Thanks Ron. When it perched on the wire I had to move several yards to avoid shooting against the sky. As luck would have it there was a large distant tree that enabled a better camera angle. I was surprised that the bird didn't fly off when I moved. Obviously a kindly little fellow!
