The time has come...

As regulars will know, the server hosting the e-group has been running on borrowed time (server OS-wise) because we run so much legacy software. There is uncertainty that of if we modernise the OS with the latest updates, which will improve security and reliability, that this will leave some applications, intact, for example, the forum and the gallery.

I can't upgrade the gallery software without updating the server OS, so I need to take the plunge and risk short term chaos. The bullet needs to be bitten, so I am serving notice that there could be some disruption to the site for several days at some point this week.

Assuming the forum will have to be updated because of the server updates, we will get this done as soon as possible. It will mean both a loss of some functionality and a gain in other areas, which I will cover more fully in due course.

Frankly, I don't know if the gallery will survive because the software is not only ancient but the developer is now out of business, so fingers crossed!

I do hope that you will bear with me while these essential changes are made.

More news and information to come!

Good luck on the update(s) Ian. :tup

In the meantime, I'll just just keep taking the tablets. ;)

Is there a way of downloading our gallery images so they can be posted back later?
Have to admit I'm not sure I've still got all mine :o so it would be good not to loose them.

Good point. The images won't be lost but there may be problems with the gallery front end. Let me look into this.

Good luck Ian, I will keep fingers crossed.

Is there any way you can give the occasional update if the forum is off-air for a while? Twitter feed, Faecesbook update or whatever?

Ian,

Do you intend to stay with this forum software or go for a more up to date one? I have used FUD forums in the past and it seems to be quite good software...

I can try and get an administrator to give his view of it if you want to chat through any pitfalls before choosing!

I am fully licensed for vBulletin and while I am aware of the pros and cons of vBulletin vs the competition I am not inclined to switch platforms. It may well be that we move to vBulletin 4, which is compatible with the latest versions of PHP abd MySQL and has a rich add-ons library. vBulletin 5 is much better now than it was and has some attractive features but less in the way of add-ons.

I really don't want to get into a heated debate about this :)

It looks like there is an interesting candidate to replace the gallery (and import from old to new) which I am researching. Our gallery is pretty big so I will need to know it can import such large quantities of images and accounts first.

Yes, sorry if a bit brusque but there are lots of anti-vBulletin souls out there. Nothing bad meant at all.
