Have you a link to one of these?

Sounds a great idea. Perhaps you could start a separate post describing such a system and how to source it, set it up, etc?

I've got one of those Trackers linked above - for Mum's Handbag as well as for the Photo Case when it's out and about on Wedding Shoots. It's not been easy to set up so far - I'll let you know my advice in about a week (if I remember, and if Mum hasn't disappeared with her Handbag !)

I also bought one. I've had it about a week and haven't really got to grips with it yet. My first impression is that battery life isn't very long, so it's not just a matter of putting it in your bag and forgetting about it until your bag goes missing!

When I've become familiar with it I'll post my experiences.

Re: One of our hire 12-40s has gone missing

I did wonder about one of these for my keys.

However, on New Year's Eve both my wife and I left the house with our keys still sitting on our respective desks, so this wouldn't have saved us :(

We could have confirmed exactly where they were, locked at home with the burglar alarm on...

Naturally, for some reason we'd temporarily taken back our key that we normally leave with our neighbours, and both our daughters were at New Year parties in London. Oh yes, it was a fancy dress party, and I was in green tights as Robin Hood, and Erindoors looked very fetching as Snow White :D

Fortunately, our party was at some friends in a nearby village who didn't have any plans at all on January 1st and they let us stay in their spare room, and one of our daughters was coming back in the early afternoon. Also we didn't spot what we'd both done until the end of the party, so we were able to enjoy ourselves, blissfully unaware.

We have learned from this: we've now hidden a spare back door key very carefully in the garden.

Sometimes low-tech solutions are the best.

Jim I change my battery every week and its not gone down but there are different modes ..like it sleeps until it gets a call ,then finds out where it is and texts you back about 20 sec later...

Re: One of our hire 12-40s has gone missing

I've just been on the phone to the Tracker people Pistnbroke mentions above - he didn't listen to a word I was asking. Basically, I'm getting an error message on a 2G card saying (in chinese) "location unknown". Two weeks I've been trying to figure out how it works.

Anyway, I've to send it back, I'll get a refund, and then I've to order another one. No chance. I'll go for a different company that can provide a bit of support over the phone (and quite possibly one which comes with a 2G card for a bit more money) ...

Re: One of our hire 12-40s has gone missing

I threw the card away that came with it and used a virgin card for £10.
The instructions are complex because the device has a variety of functions but it only took me about 10 min to sort it ..working great ...as my friend in coventry who dialed it for a test said you are on the north side of the aisle in st margrets in Hudderfield...good enough for me

Re: One of our hire 12-40s has gone missing

I'm using a Virgin card, too. It didn't come with any SIM card.

I think the unit I've got may be non-functional; but, nevertheless, I'm updating this thread because (a) telephone support is non-existent (as well as (b) the unit may not be working).

Re: One of our hire 12-40s has gone missing

I'm using a giffgaff card and as I use giffgaff on my mobile 'phone, it doesn't use any credit however much you text it and receive texts from it.

Because the instruction leaflet is printed so small, I photographed and OCRd the part describing its operation and have posted it here for downloading:

https://copy.com/wGZ7NCv9udrJyOXZ

I'm finding the battery only lasts 5 days, so as I stated earlier I consider it of limited usefulness and regret buying it.

Mine just gives a map reference and not the sort of details such as "the north side of the aisle in st margrets in Hudderfield"!

Not being pedantic, but as someone who lived in that fine town I can say there is no St. Margaret's in Huddersfield, so methinks Pistnbroke is using poetic licence here.
