EP1 270, worth considering?

Hi All

I stumbled across an ebay seller listing refurbished EP1's with 14-42mm lens for 270 posted.

Its a superb price from what i can see, and originally i was looking for a good point and shoot to keep in the pocket when on the river hoping to bump into a salmon that can record video, an E3 isn't much fun to carry about for a full 12 hours.

I have read the various reviews and the main niggle seems to be the auto focusing time but my primary interest is in the video capturing capability. How do current users rate it?

For speculative shots or for a quick picture of my quarry before it swims on,

it started life as a 10 shot panorama, -6 degrees on the Tay in March

The E-P1 is quite a good camera and I have just bought one for the same reason as you seem to need it.

It feels very solid and well built.
It takes great photos.
It is small.

Although it is unfancied and superseded it has the same sensor and lens as the later Olympus Pen models so takes essentially the same quality of picture. If you can do without the flash of the E-PL1 and the really expensive viewfinder addition to the current Pen models then it will provide good service.

I have had mine for a month or two and taken lots of great photos with it.

The latest firmware sorts out most of the focusing problems with the 14-42 and it is reasonably quick. To widen my range of lenses I have bought a 100mm f2.8 Nikon lens (as recommended by Snaarman).

Aha! I saw that :-) How do you like that Nikon 100mm??

BTW, Yes, I would grab an EP1 except I can't work with rear screens only, being long sighted
Sounds like a nice price.

Pete,

Not sure yet, adaptor arrived this morning - in the middle of a telephone interview :( I will have a go on Friday.

Don't want to hijack the thread so:

Scanny,

Yep, a great buy at the price. Consider what else that is compact and good that you can get for the money (i.e. not much). It is a bit bigger than jeans pocket sized but easily fits into a handbag/day rucksack. It's also a joy to use.

I've bought from this seller (Digigood/Pace USA) before : Oly lens, Oly binos and Oly dictaphone! It's all US stock. Impressive seller but they must be a pain for authorised UK Oly sellers.

Hi,

I have been really pleased with my E-P1 and have sold my E3. It goes almost everywhere with me. I used the 14-42mm lens when I first got it but I have the m14-150mm lens now (a bit trickier). I'd recommend it and I got very annoyed with a John Lewis salesman this evening who was being very negative about the E-P1 and the E-PL1. At the price it seems good.

Just to let you know the E-PL1 with 14-42mm is on Warehouse Express for 409, with a free Retro bag, and a 30 cashback (off the 409).

Can I thank everyone for their advice and contribution. I've ordered one up so hopefully it will be here and have a test on Saturday.

Thanks again, now to find a Ft adaptor :)

I'm sure I've purchased an e500 body through digigood previously. I gave them a call and it will arrive in the morning.

Giving away my old BLS1's has come back to bite me now.

I'm looking forward to having a play with it.

I love my EP-1 and, other than macro work I tend to use it in preference to my E-3 because of its size and portability with a couple of lenses. I'm sure you'll enjoy it enormously and may find that it sneaks into you bag or pocket more than you think it will. I especially like it with the VF-1 and 17mm for general street shooting and landscapes. Sounds like it's not a bad price at all either.

I found some clones for about eight pounds somewhere, probably 7 day shop.

I had one and it was a real eyeopener, I evenually got the ep 2 cos it has the viewfinder accesary and I use it for all sorts. My only quibble is that it is a wee bit slow to take the picture but the quality is outstanding. At that price by it.

Re: EP1 270, worth considering?

Thanks Nick, I ordered a few up.

The EP1 arrived today, other than some marking on the lens mount it's as new.

A quick firmware update improved the Af and the menu systems seem concise when shooting.

It's a horrible day up here so I'll see how it handles a typical dreech scots day later.

Thanks for all the advice

I am delighted with the EP1, and after trying it on Saturday I love it.

Soo much so buying the 50mm f2 for my E3 has been replaced by the 14-150 mft lens.

Nice tonal range. Is this with the 14-150?
