Distortion

I use Master 2 to do my Raw conversions.

All I do mostly in Basic 1 is a bit of Ex comp and maybe WB. In Basic 2 - Sharpness to + 2 on ALL and Noise Filter to High on ALL.
I do not vary these as I do not know/cannot see anything happening on the preview.Short of doing trials with various changes and comparing them I don't know what difference there is.

I put this shot in Foto Fair and on Talk earlier and someone said the verticals were out but could be corrected.

I thought I could remember reading on here that it could be done in Viewer 2 so put the LARGE file ( 180 pics) in viewer 2 and went on RAW but everything just looked the same as Master 2 ...so just the same adjustments available.

Went online to ask Master V Viewer and I saw it said distortion could be altered in MASTER as well as Viewer..... ????

Also while on line the consensus was do not even bother with either oly versions as they are really poor - I can see why they say this.

Is the distortion adjustment available and if so how do I see it ?

I have limited understanding or capability with this software lark  but it is unavoidable if I want to get anywhere.:o

I haven't heard that Viewer 2 has keystone correction. Most commercial software editing packages do. Incidentally, is there any reason why you are sticking to Master 2 instead of using Viewer 2 - the latter has a much more advanced RAW conversion engine.

"I have limited understanding or capability with this software lark but it is unavoidable if I want to get anywhere."

Thanks Ian....as I say I cannot connect with these sort of things.
When you say " advanced RAW conversion engine." I know it sounds like a good thing but really it means nothing to me.

I use Master 2 because the great people on here have helped with little things here and there and I can at least get a raw file off the camera and through Master into P/shop.
Normally I am satisfied (but frustrated) with that but when I think I need something extra like sorting out the distortion thing I sometimes think Master is not enough and I have Viewer 2 ...Gimp and a few other Trial ones on my computer but basically they all go completely over my head.

I put a similar shot on TP and someone said there's loads of tutorials on line to help sort out the vertical distortion and I spent many a happy(not) hour listening to americans telling me how to do this that and the other and most looked really easy...all I need is some software to use even the simplest tools.
I only have P/shop 7 and I think the 7 stands for 1907 not 2007

I looked online to compare viewer and master and there were several references to them having the capability to repair distortion but I cannot find them this morning.

I really am a hopeless case Ian and if you say that OLY stuff cannot sort out the distortion then I will have to leaver it at that.
Some others might come on and say "I use this that or the other" which would be nice but If I was to get it and open it I would just sit there looking and be mesmerised at where to start. :o

Thanks
Keith

Hi Chevvy...Yes this is my fave building...NO VERTICALS/HORIZONTALS.....;):D

Here's a street view of Brum ...it's unmissable in the Bull Ring....right next to the older St Martins in the Bull Ring Church.....just visible on the right in my snap.

I think at night they have different coloured floodlights to make it even more spectacular.
Cheers

Re: Distortion

Distortion can be corrected in Viewer 2 - but that's barrel or pincushion distortion, not perspective correction of falling verticals - sometimes called keystone correction, which is what I think you are looking for.

It probably is Ian now I know that there are 2 different things.

What does the barrel/pincushion do ....what do I click to see it.

Keith, I almost can not believe you cant get along with Viewer or Master etc. with all the nice photos you are used to show us on here. It really puzzles me when you said you applied +2 sharpness and full noise reduction on all of your photos! I cant think of a situation where I find these settings usefull - but think they are quite a bit destructive instead.
Anyhow, I put your photo into ShiftN and show it here, if you don't mind:

link to photo removed, as I deleted it from my gallery now

If this is what you were after, then please download this image of yours from here - and I will delete it from my gallery soon after that.

Re: Distortion

Thanks Falk that is brilliant- just what I needed.
I copied it now.

AS regards using destructive settings on raw - I always need sharpness and NR on my shots so use the features...the previews on Master and Viewer do not really show me anything is happening.
Maybe I should just convert them through Master without doing anything...but then I am back to just using Jpegs.

Downloaded your ShiftN and cannot do anything on that either....I click OPEN and it comes up but then I am clueless.
Told you I cannot operate anything above a basic thing.

What machine are you computing your photos with? Mine is a fairly old one with a second hand and even older graphics card in it - and I know, I have sometimes to wait more then two minutes, until made settings are processed and finally shown in Viewer! Master was a little quicker I think, but I would recommend making the transition to Viewer 2, and if only because of the light box feature. I wonder if your computer is so slow as mine is and this might be the cause why you never saw any changes in your pics? You just need to wait looonger *zzz

Well, thats for sure! It was your gallery-jpeg, so nothing raw left in it ...

Hi Falk...I have managed to find out what was stopping me......

when I went OPEN a window would open but I could not find where my pics were...I have now set it to show me MY DOCUMENTS - where I store them- and I have put one through the process and it WORKED...you are a life saver as I have SO MANY pics that would have been binned.
I will have a go at some and put them on when a problem with uploading has been sorted.

Thanks again
Keith

Re: Distortion

Keith, I am glad I was able to get you on track - even though I am uncertain where exactly your problem was now?!
Just the location of your files or was all this indeed an issue with (lacking) computing power, so that you never got to see your processed raw's and rejected those, which seemed to far off to be rescued from jpeg only?

From the above I see that you used ShiftN (makes quite a difference!). Did you also use distortion correction in Master/Viewer before and/or was that insufficent to straighten the verticals?

Cheers, Falk
