Same thoughts here Ross. v8 is pretty good already.
I may skip this one and wait for 10 as it seems v7 Pro users as also eligible for the upgrade price to 9.

Re: CaptureOne 9 released

Yesterday I was wandering around the rural areas around Millmerran in southern Queensland taking photos of roads and road name signage in order to compare the real official names with the signage and with what is on the GPS databases. I use either my Canon 6D (which has a built-in GPS) or my Olympus OM-D E-M1 coupled to my iPhone to geo-tag the photos. As usual, I take my photos in raw format and process them using Capture One.

On getting home, I processed all the photos using Capture One 8.3 and then exported them to jpeg files for use at work.

On waking up this morning, I saw that Capture One Pro 9 had been released and duly updated my copy. The new version insisted on updating my current session and so I decided to reprocess my Millmerran sign photos with no changes to the editing settings..... Just to see what would happen.

I must admit that I was more than a bit surprised at to the improvement in the quality of the images. Either Phase One have done some major improvements to their raw engine, or they have improved their support for Olympus cameras. I'll only know which when I have had a chance to play further with files from my Canon EOS 6D. - Probably in a week or two as I am working on a rush project at present.

To me, it appears that the most impressive improvements have been "under the hood". At present, I am very happy with the upgrade, although I am still waiting to see how much it costs in Aussie Dollars.

Good to hear your feedback, I'd be interested in what particular aspects of the output have seen a boost in quality. Also any new features which you particularly like or dislike.

I take all my photos in raw format and edit them to be as close to the reality that I remember.

The two aspects which appeared to be better were:

1. The colours appear to be a lot more "natural". Less fiddling around with colours is needed.

2. The contrast control slider appears to be a lot more effective and it works a lot more smoothly. On earlier versions, I found it to be fairly ineffective.

I'll play around a bit further when I get home on the weekend.

Having fiddled around over the course of the past few weekends, I have noticed that, on both my E-M1 and on the 6D, the handling of contrast adjustment and HDR Shadow adjustment is superior to earlier versions. You can now extract a lot more detail out of the shadows, without the photos appearing to be "washed out".

Specifically, support for my E-M1 now also appears to be a lot better, with the traditional rich (but not oversaturated) Olympus colours coming through as a default. Skin tones appear to be more natural than in previous versions.

I am now using using Capture One Pro 9.0.1 as my primary raw file processing tool for all cameras.

All in all, I am happy with the upgrade.

Thanks Larry. You've talked me into it & I've paid for the upgrade (AU$156.27) but will do the download during off-peak after midnight (due to my limited & slow internet account) & will discover the improvements tomorrow. Sometimes I do find the colours a little difficult to bend to my desire at present & hope that will be better with CO9 then. :tup

Re: CaptureOne 9 released

OK, here is one I took over Christmas.
Cropped (for desired framing) original JPEG.

And using CO9

http://e-group.uk.net/gallery/data/5...e_adj-cr-s.jpg

CO9 adjustments made were:
As shot
Brightness -6
Highlight 35
Shadow 40
Clarity Method Natural
Clarity 10
Structure 20

Both images uploaded were resized & sharpened (+5) for web display in OV3.

I'm pretty happy with that & will eventually learn to use more of what CO9 has to offer (not that I mastered a great deal in CO8 though).

Thanks Ross. Notice how you have managed to get more out of the shadows, particularly in the dogs' fur, and that the colours are more vibrant.

I am in Victoria at the moment and today went out to visit a dairy farm outside Thorpdale in Gippsland. I took loads of photos. Must process them and see if any are "keepers".

Looks pretty good to me Ross, it's looking like I will upgrade sooner than later :)

Edit: The deed is done :)

Ah, so you gave in too? :D

Enjoy & have fun. All the best for next year then. *party *chr

I was just about to finish this post off by saying next year I will have try & get into using layers in CO9 (as well as finish off work around home), but we were just visited by a mother & baby brushtail possum (she has just polished off two apples), so now I have more photos to play with. *yes

I just thought I'd add one of my Mother & Baby Brushtail Possum shots here. The original is resized & sharpened in OV3 only (taken on my E-M5 with ZD14-54 II lens @ f3, ISO 6400, 1/15 sec).

http://fourthirds-user.com/galleries...OC300317-s.jpg

Followed by the raw file being processed in CO9 (cropped, 1:1 Clarity 10 & Structure 20, just because I could plus a little circular vignetting) & resized & sharpened in OV3. The as "Shot" WB is pretty much the same as the Oly JPEG output, which is how I have left it. The back lighting is a yellow fluro spiral globe & the front lighting a 4W Daylight LED globe both under the eves.

Hope you have an enjoyable 2016. *chr
