So, Who is up for a Bristol Meet Up?

I propose the following:

Ashton Court
SS Great Britain
Harbour Side and Docs
City Centre

There is also the Bristol Industrial Museum near the area.

All are within 5 Miles of each other. All apart from Ashton Court can be visited when parked in a central car park

I'm up for it, John.

Ashton Court is a public park and entrance and parking are free. The mansion is used for functions. There is a cafe etc there.

The SS Great Britain is well worth a visit. It needs half a day to do it justice, but there are some good photo opportunities.

However there is more than enough to photograph in the harbour area FOC if you are with someone who knows it really well (e.g. me?). It could all be done from one car park.

Haven't been very active recently I'm afraid - I need to change that!

I forgot to say - the Industrial Museum is closed for a heavy rebuild - next year maybe? :(

I'm in Salisbury, a dedicated non-motorist but there are direct trains from here to Brizzle. Except on Sundays of course, when the entire railway system becomes a lottery. It would be great to come and meet up.

Ciao ... John

I have spoken to the visitor centre at the SS Gt Britain.

If we get 20 visiting then the price some down a bit. Otherwise it will cost

Adults 11.50
Children (<16) 5.95
Concession (>60, students and unemployed) 9.50

The great thing is that once the ticket has been purchased, you can visit again for free for 12 months.

If we get enough people, they may be willing to open up earlier (30-60 mins) to let us in before the general public....but we need to make sure that there is enough of us.

I have also been in contact with Ashton Court. I will get more information by end of the week.

The only stipulation for both locations so far, is that the photos are for non commercial use. I.E. you cannot sell them.

I have also been advised to avoid the first week of June, as schools are on holiday. So I was thinking about Saturday 12th June or the 19th. Does this give enough time for people, or would a date in May be better?

If that is the case I may be able to interest some of our camera club members in coming along - a good opportunity to spread the Oly message to the great unwashed :)

The June dates sound good.

A meet in Bristol! I'm excited... never been to one before :)

j.baker
4th May 2010, 12:15 PM
Nick, and other new members, FYI familys are welcome at most events. Some of us bring our partners/wifes, and some even dare to bring their offspring :D:D

Lets see how many we can get to come.

Nick
4th May 2010, 12:26 PM
Would i be able to bring a friend? He has a Nikon but he's not anti-Olympus :)

j.baker
4th May 2010, 12:33 PM
The more the merrier I say. On the last Wales meet, we had a Canon user. It was nice to be able to compare the cameras and shooting techniques.

All we need to know is the number of confirmed people. If we get over 20, I will probably be able to get the reduced entry fees.

Nick
4th May 2010, 12:59 PM
Cool, i'll ask him tonight. I might try and rent a lens or try and get the 14-54 by then (i want one sooo bad!), and i can't afford the 12-60 :(

j.baker
4th May 2010, 01:18 PM
Nice,

There will be lots of lens to have a look at. Sometimes members let other members try out their lenses for a short while.

theMusicMan
4th May 2010, 02:59 PM
I'd be up for this John, but not on Bank Holiday weekend at the end of May. Also, I'd have to be careful of the weekend around 14th June as that is Heathers 13th birthday.

j.baker
4th May 2010, 03:03 PM
John, I would be great to meet up with you again.

I am happy to do the 19th June, but it depends on what other members can make.

Nick
4th May 2010, 03:07 PM
19th should be fine for me.

theMusicMan
4th May 2010, 03:18 PM
Weekend of the 5th/6th June would possibly work too I guess, John. Also 22nd/23rd of May could be a go-er :)

I have to be careful what I book for anyone still interested on the Skomer trip as well though.

j.baker
4th May 2010, 03:34 PM
Lets set the date as the 19th June 2010.

John can you modify the thread title to include a date?

j.baker

Nick,

At the top of the this page, there is an Olympus Hire link.

Ian, the site owner, has setup a lens hire service.

Nick
4th May 2010, 07:38 PM
Just wanted to borrow one at the meet, or during the meet. I know Ian does hire but its quite a lot of hassle for the day, i might get one from him when i go on holiday as he does do good prices :)

I'm quite excited about the meet! You guys been to bristol much before?

Nick

Count me in for this get together. I've checked on Google maps and the journey by car should take just over 2 hours, [plus at least a half hour getting lost in Bristol *yes]. Just about the limit for a day out but, car willing, I'll be there. *chr

theMusicMan
11th May 2010, 07:05 AM
Thanks John. I am looking forward to this meeting, as you know, I like plenty of variety so the more places we can photograph the better.

Could also take in Clevedon Pier maybe...? or perhaps that's a little too far out and sunset a little late (20:30'ish).

j.baker
11th May 2010, 07:12 AM
John,

The activities/locations that I will propose are not set in stone. If you, or anyone else, want to visit other locations, then that is a good idea.

After all, its all about the photographs.

Nick
11th May 2010, 07:48 AM
I've always wanted to get one of Cleveland Pier but not essential as i can pop down there one day on my own.

Bikie John

Have a good day y'all, sorry I won't be joining you.

Had a long day, but as I drove though Bristol city centre this evening I saw some other locations.

Bluereef Aquaruim
Millennium Square (next to paking)
The city centre is a 5 min walk from the parking.

Here is a quick update on the Bristol Meet.

I visited Ashton Court Estate yesterday to get more information. There is a lot to do and see there.

Two types of Deer, Red & Fallow in separate paddocks, Grass and flower meadows, various woods and several buuildings and gate houses.

And the best bit is that it free, including the parking.

Here is a link to a Google map, taken from the www.ashtoncourtestate.co.uk website.

9:30 meet up at the SS Great Britain

11:00 harbour side and town centre...basically a photo what every you want.

12:00 Find somewhere for lunch. Either pub/fast food or sarnies.

13:00 Ashton Court Estate

16:00 Attempt to find parking near Clifton suspension bridge.....basically there is no parking, so there may be a walk. You can get to it from Ashton Court estate, but it is a long walk (1 Mile).

The times are estimates and people can always go off one their own.

j.baker
11th June 2010, 05:27 PM

I will, as usual be bringing a selection of lenses with me - if anyone has a specific need to try something please let me know.

I will also be bringing a Pen E-PL1 and an E-P2 (not E-PL2 as I originallt typed! :D) as well as the new m.Zuiko 9-18 and m.Zuiko 14-150.

HIRE! If you would like to save on the 13.51 shipping cost to you, and you would like to hire a lens and take it home with you, contact me asap to arrange things.

Here is a Google map of Bristol.

http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?q=51.449206,-2.608266&num=1&t=h&sll=51.449768,-2.604876&sspn=0.010364,0.041113&ie=UTF8&ll=51.449895,-2.600616&spn=0.005182,0.016469&z=17

If everyone is OK with a little bit of walking, then I suggest that we park at the Millennium Square main car park. It is just behind @ Bristol. We should have no problem in getting a space. However, for those that know the area, please feel free to park when you can.

I am suggesting a 9:00-9:30am start so we can be the first into the ss Great Britain....before it gets busy with normal visitors :)

I will try to be down there by 9:00am.

The ss Great Britain will cost 11.95, however tickets allow free, unlimited return visits for 12 months, and audio tours!
Parking is also chargeable. Costs vary.

Long Ashton Estate is Free.
Clifton suspension bridge is free to look at :) but it costs a small amount to drive across. The last time I went across is was 20p (cash no card), but expect it has gone up

There is no parking at the bridge but I have been informed that we should, subject to space, be able to park at the Long Ashton Estate gold course car park, and walk to the bridge.

The weather should be dry....but who knows.

There will be a bit of walking involved.

Nick
15th June 2010, 07:07 AM
It's now 50p for cars but free for pedestrians and bicycles.

Sorry to hear that Cinders.

BBC Weather suggests sunny intervals and dry - it's always good to have some cloud in the sky :)

Once again - let me know if there is a particular lens you would like me to bring. I will definitely be bringing the E-PL1, E-P2, plus the new Micro Four Thirds 14-150 and 9-18 lenses.

And if anyone wants to hire a lens to take home after the end of the day and save on the usual 13.51 delivery charge, I can arrange that if you contact me by the end of Thursday.

j.baker

SteverH has made some suggestions for cheaper parking.

Being the lazy person that I am, here is his message

Car Park by SS Great Britain, Gas Ferry Road, BS1 6JL: if you follow brown tourist signs to the SSGB you will find it! 4 hours max, pay and display, believed to be 1.10! From here visit the SSGB or walk through to the city centre.

http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?q=51.448112,-2.607034&num=1&t=h&sll=51.434761,-2.565495&sspn=0.006295,0.006295&hl=en&ie=UTF8&ll=51.448157,-2.606356&spn=0.00466,0.009645&z=17

Parking for Suspension Bridge: we will travel up Rownham Hill: fork right into Burwalls Road half way up the steep part of the hill, then turn sharp left into Bridge Road. You are now by the Bridge. Park in Bridge Road where you can and walk back to the Bridge. It's worth walking right over and visiting the viewing platform by the Avon Gorge Hotel.

Note - you cannot turn right at the top of Rownham Hill! The postcode is BS8 3PE but I wouldn't assume that a satnav will get it right..

http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?q=bridge+road&f=l&hl=en&sll=51.452188,-2.634391&sspn=0.00466,0.009645&ie=UTF8&split=1&rq=1&ev=zi&radius=0.25&hq=bridge+road&hnear=&t=h&ll=51.452496,-2.632363&spn=0.00466,0.009645&z=17

After visiting the bridge, continue along Bridge Road and go straight over at the traffic lights into the Ashton Court estate (Kennel Lodge entrance). From here drive down to the mansion.

Thank you Steve.

Andy (Shenstone), I am sorry that you cannot make the event, maybe see you at the next one.

I agree, this was an excellent day. Cold on times despite the sunshine, but a great day nonetheless and my thanks to John for organising it, and to Ian & Julia for bringing down a superb selection of lenses.

Heather really enjoyed herself too, and spent some quality time with Lara and Lizzie (Ian & Julias daughters) - she said to me to mention on here that it was great to see them again.

Friends over just now, so photos will be processed some time tomorrow I guess, but I am looking forward to seeing what everyone managed to come up with... especially those shots with the awesome Oly 300mm f2.8!!

Thank you to the people who made it down on Saturday. The weather held up, if a little cool at times.

Both Teresa and I had a great day out, and we look forward to the next one.

It was great to meet up yesterday - lots of familiar faces, and plenty of new ones! I think everyone had a good day.

Ewen deserves a special mention for coming all the way from Stoke *chr - and of course Ian with family, lenses and goody bag!

Great shot of the Deer, John - that's a lovely one. Darned flies eh, they were everywhere!!

The shot of Nick is a nice one, though ever so slightly underexposed and could possibly do with a little exposure/brightness lift.

Had a great day, thanks for organising it.

Having two John Bs was very confusing to say the least! :)

First batch of photos looks very promising - I'll be starting on mine after lunch.

I forgot to thank John Baker for providing the inspiration and organisation for the day out so thanks John for that! And thank you to all who came along from as far as Stoke on Trent.

Great to meet you Ewan. Grabbed a nice portrait of you (I think) too... it's in my pics thread from the day.
