Hi guys I have just bought an IR 720 filter when I put it onto the lens I can't see through the viewfinder is this normal with the IR 720?

Yes
you can either compose and then put the filter on or use live view...then experiment to get your exposure...usually longer than that metered...

Turn on live view boost mode, you can then see the image for composition purposes with the IR 720 lens attached. Remember, this isn't really an IR filter... it's an ambient light filter. It filters out a significant amount of ambient light, allowing light at the IR end of the spectrum through. There's still an IR filter (an actual IR blocking filter) in the camera which is why you require long exposure times with an IR Filter attached to the lens.
