Morning All

I'm lucky enough to have some spare cash left before pay day this month (which makes a change), so am thinking of adding another lens to my collection. I currently own the 14-42mm, 40-150mm and 35mm Macro plus a couple of legacy lenses.

At first I decided to add a wide angle lens maybe the 9-18mm, Sigma 10-20mm or the 11-22mm if I could find a cheap/secondhand one. Then as usual I changed my mind :) and starting looking at a longer zoom or Macro. Then I changed my mind again:rolleyes: and thought that adding the EC-14 teleconverter might be a good idea as I could use it with my current lenses giving me a longer zoom and Macro.

Does anyone use the EC-14 with the 40-150mm and if so is it any good, also what affect would it have on the 35mm Macro would it give me a longer working distance from the subject or will it just become a longer prime and lose it's macro abilities?

I have the EC14, and an excellent item it is. I have used with with both kit lenses, the 11-22, the 50mm macro and the 14-54. In all cases the EC14 does very little damage to the image (which is in fact remarkable).

The 40-150 with EC14 does work, and is quite sharp, but it gets fairly dark at the long end so you need a bright day to get the best out of it.

here is an example from last year with that combination at the long end.

I would recommend the EC14 as an investment for the future, and use it as an excuse to buy some of the pro lenses at which point it will really shine :-)

Cheers Pete, thats a lovely shot I think the EC-14 may be the way to go then, just need to find out how it works with the 35mm Macro now.

If your interested there is a EC14 on ebay at the moment (currently on 155 with just under 2 days to go). They dont come up on there very often, having said that I won one a couple of days ago, paid 236 inc RMSD which I thought not to bad compared to around 365 new.

Hi, If you do end up going for a new one, it's worth having a word with Kerso (http://myworld.ebay.co.uk/kerso/) , though his prices are better off ebay.
My 2 or 3 transactions have gone smoothly. *yes

Don't forget you can always hire these items from Ian for a few days to try (I am not related :D) I am contemplating doing so with the EC-14.

In your situation I'd be inclined to make a 50-200mm Zuiko a priority - SWD or non SWD. It's very versatile. There's been a couple on here recently.

The 20-200mm would be nice but maybe a bit too expensive and heavy for what I want at the mo, I might consider it though as I've been thinking and the 40-150mm with EC-14 might be a bit of a handfull on my E-420 with no IS.

Depending on the quality and speed you want from a lens you could consider the Oly 70-300, I've never used it but those that have seem to like it. It's a cheaper option than the 50-200, not quite in the same league and a bit slower in F stop terms but significantly cheaper.

I think I've finally made my mind up I'm going to go for a second hand non swd 50-200mm now then maybe the EC-14 or a wide angle lens next time I have some spare cash.

Thanks everyone for the the advice/recommendations.

The EC-14 works very well with the 50-200 (either version). I'm sure you will be very happy with this combination.
