View Full Version : Voting - E-System Users 2009 End Of Year Challenge

Jonesgj
4th January 2010, 10:14 PM
The 2009 End of Year “Open Challenge”

The Idea: A great opportunity to share our best photos of the year, and because the theme and time span are so wide, the quality should be very high!

In brief: Choose your best three images, any theme or style taken by you on an E-series camera between 1st January 2009 and 31st December 2009 and send it in!

Prize: None, other than the right to use “Winner of the E-System User Group 2009 Open Challenge” in your forum signature, may be a 'special Avatar' and may be some Olympus goodies from Ian.

How to vote:

All registered members of the e-group forum may vote, including those who submit entries. Those who submit entries may vote for their own photo but are expected to allot their choices fairly on perceived merit.
Voters should list their three choices in order of preference, by code number shown in Gallery text and title to avoid confusion.
Points will be allocated as follows: three to first choice, two to second choice, one to third choice.
Please send your votes to me jonesgj using the Private Message system.
This competition is just for fun and by entering or voting you accept to abide by the spirit of this competition and acknowledge that the decision of the judge (me :) ) is final.
Votes will be accepted from now up to midnight on the 31st January 2010. Results will be announced soon after.

The images can be found in the "e-group end of year 2009 Challenge" Gallery

Well I've looked through the photos, and looked again... its going to be so very difficult to pick 3!
Theres a great selection of styles and photos there, well done everyone!

It would be difficult to single out 30 never mind 3!

However, I think I've made my choice from a very long shortlist and hope to vote later, subject to one last review of my choices.

Difficult, difficult, difficult!

No tricks - some are. However they have the same titles so there shouldn't be any big issue or confusion!

Okay you guys noticed the duplicates! ..... It took absolutetly ages to load 90 shots into the gallery late last night and just when I was getting the hang of it (and yes I may have had a teensy weensy sip of red wine) BAM! I uploaded a few, well somewhere. When I eventually recovered them, by 'copying' back to the correct gallery, I couldnt make the duplicates disappear.... :( I did make sure it wouldnt advantage/disadvantage and went to bed; I had to get up early to get stuck on a train on the east coast line!

I hope nobody minds me leaving the duplicates for now ... I'm not up to facing that gallery again, just yet ... maybe the admin boys, John or Ian might be able to help, at least until I have my strength back, or have another bottle of wine to hand ;)

Anyway .... Votes are coming in and yes, it's a difficult one.

Kind regards

Just starting to look and I thought that a reminder from when we had the last big competition is that if you add the pictures on your personal shortlists to your favorites it allows you to create a cut-down selection for yourself to look through and it also gives some pleasant feedback to people who may not be in your top 3, but maybe made your top 10

You don't need to, but it's nice

This is really hard (but enjoyable) work. Easy to pick 89, 88 and 87, they're mine. The first 3 is awfully difficult as they are all so good. I've got it down to my best 26 now and need a rest. Carry on tomorrow.

Ignore this ... it worked last time because we all added our own pictures ... this time we had someone do all the hard work for us so he'll get all the feedback

Well the votes are coming in and its very interesting. Without being too analytical and swaying future votes the majority of votes are spread across quite a few photos underlining what many have already said; the choice is a difficult one.

Thanks to everyone who has voted so far.

the absence of a theme doesn't help in making any assessment either - but at least the process was extremely enjoyable *chr

You're right photo_owl.

The idea spawned from something I saw on another site. There wasn't a theme for a competition and as a result the quality of the pictures was superb. This made viewing the entries extremely enjoyable, and it really didn't matter who won.

I hope 1) everyone enjoys viewing the pictures whether or not they vote and 2) it inspires people this year and encourages them to enter next year.

I have certainly enjoyed viewing a great set of photos and despite work needed, I'd put my hand up to run it again (if no one else wanted to) next year.

May be next year the voting time can be cut down? For health reasons if nothing else!

I am confident I can turn around the things I need to do quite quickly.

Patience, patience (is a virtue!). Is it really likely that with 1,235 registered members, all will have voted by now, or even will by 31st January.

Actually, it would be interesting to know what the stats are as, if 92 photos were submitted to the Challenge and each member could send three photos, only thirty to forty members entered (or at the most 92!). That's between 2.4% and at the most, 7.5%.

When it's all over, it'll be interesting to know what percentage of members voted.

Knowing that my chances of winning are negligable, I am quite happy to wait until Graydon is happy to publish the results after the 31st., having checked, double checked and consumed all the necessary alcoholic refreshments which he will no doubt need to perform his commendable duty.

Indeed Bob - I was just trying to come up with something more than "bump"....

I too will be facinated in a whole load of the stats around this endeavour. I find the approach of another regular 'challenge' of both permitting 'honorable mentions' and posting the complete scores for all images particularily useful in understanding what people (in general) are seeing, and looking for, when viewing/scoring.

Jonesgj
19th January 2010, 10:20 PM
Bob... should I drink the alcohol BEFORE counting or should I go get some more?!?! ;)

So far, from the Members list page I see 1192 members. 22 Members have voted so far. There are 89 pictures (not 92 - remember the little incident with the three duplicates I told you to forget?) submitted by 31 entrants. This means that 1.85% of the userbase has voted, and 2.6% of the userbase has entered. Of course I do not know how active the userbase is and I haven't the data to analyse how many people were actually in the userbase at the time of the challenge. Despite the small percentages I still think it's a brilliant response, and all the entrants and voters have been very enthusiastic and supportive.

Obviously lots more people can still vote if they wish ( e.g. 1170 other registered users, including the remaining 29% of the competition entrants)

.... I think I'll go get that drink now Bob!

It is noticable that the pictures on the first page of the gallery have had more views than those on the subsequent pages.

Would it be possible for next years comp to rotate the pictures so that everyone gets a crack at being on the first page?

Just a thought.

Hi Len,

I think its something we could consider next year but it also depends upon your view settings. I have mine to display 90 images (max) by fileName ASC, so all but 2 images are on the first page!

Looking at the views using my setting suggest the early images do have more views and this tapers-off as people run out of stamina. I would like to think that this hasn't stopped people viewing the ones they think will be really good; may be they have just been more selective as to which ones they click-on to view? This theory break down if people are looking at my first page last.

Maybe we could recommend 'view settings' next time and warn viewers that there are more than x pages to view.

.... and now from Mark Twain "lies, damn lies and statistics"

I have stats based on 12 items per page and how many people have voted on each page and the number of points given to that page. This is indicative, again, because individuals may have their gallery 'view' set-up differently, but happy to share after the competition is complete. My view, based on the evidence, is that it hasn't really influenced the voting.

Hope this allays your fears.

Kind regards

I too had noticed the higher number of views on the first page. But then ( at least I thought) I spotted another trend - some of the portrait/wildlife/bird photos seem to have a higher number of views than those around them - possibly because people want to apply the ultimate test "Are the eyes sharp" which doesn't necessarily merit an enlarged view of the landscape/whatever next to it. And I've no doubt other members can spot other trends - or maybe I've just been forced to watch too much CSI, NCIS etc. for my own good.

My point is - Graydon's worked hard enough on this as it is. And if his stats confirm that the votes are not biased towards the early pages then why make more work.

And no, my shots aren't anywhere near the front lol

I viewed them a number of times as a slide show. This meant that I cut short the slide show a few times when the kids or the wife needed something, the phone rang or I went to do something else.

I did however view all images on more than one occassion and drew up a short list from all the images prior to voting.

Could it be that a greater number of "good 'uns" are on or near the early pages.
Mind you all this is out the window as most people have different ideas of what is good anyway. And then there are "pet" subjects that some may vote on and ignor all other subjects.
My 3 entries are spread out amongs the whole gallery and I have no idea if that is good or bad........It's all a bit of fun anyway and gives us all another chance to see some choice pics.

I like to think most folk on here are honest people, and if I thought my images warranted a placing in the top three, then that's the way I'd vote. I'd hope everyone voted that way too.

As it happens, I felt there were many better than mine and none of them warranted a top three, and so didn't vote for myself.

I see there is a great fall-off in image views if you're on page 1 of the gallery, from 200 or so on page 1, to 50 by the time you're on page 3.

Seems you have more chance if your image is on the first page, judging by the number of views.

Perhaps the morale here is to make sure you get your entry in early then!

Seriously folks... let's not give anyone a hard time here, OK. The entries are the entries, and they are in the order they are, c'est la vie.

Nothing sinister going on here; no conspiracy, no fix, no malice... just a fun challenge, organised out of Graydons good nature. Let's enjoy every entry, and thank everyone who entered.
