Can anyone give a feel of how this lens (i.e. the newer one, not the original f2.8 one) does in comparison say to the Oly kit 14-42 and either of the 14-54s? If you have an E-4x0 camera it at least seems to offer some IS.

What do you mean by PL lens? Do you have a link?

I think Maczero means Panasonic Leica.

It is a very good lens in it's own right, certainly a match for the 14-54. It is a tad slower and has no weather/dust proofing, but the in lens IS is very handy if your cam body does not have IS.
It is VERY expensive to buy outright, but they can sometimes be picked up on fleebay for less than 200, but then 14-54 can be got for 200 TO 250.
If IS is more important than F2.8 (bearing in mind that IS will let you shoot effectively F2.8 or less on PL lens) it is a good buy. ( I like mine!)
