Has anyone any experience of the Metz 36 flash?
I have been looking round for a cheap Metz 44 or 48 but it was suggested to me in one shop today that the 36 would be a reasonable basic unit to buy for someone who hasn't got much cash but still needs more power than the built in unit on my e-510.
They couldn't be sure if it would be ok with my 18-180 and/or 10-20mm lenses and wouldn't offer a sale or return so I could try it!
Any thoughts welcome
Kevin

I bought a Metz 36 the other week on a punt and it is a good deal more powerful than the built-in flash on my 520. Used with a 14-42 and now a 14-54 I have had some fair results. I am a newbie to this though, so please bear that in mind. What price were you quoted? Amazon had one for 62, which was why I took a punt.

I am also new to DSLRs so am in the same boat as you, but thanks for your reply.
I was quoted 73 and have seen it on the net for 65 so your amazon price looks a good deal - I'll check it out later.
I'm just concerned that my lenses are 62 and 77mm so a bit bigger than the 14-42 and so I might need a bigger flash to avoid a shadow from the lens.

I have the 44 and yes it does a good job, expect the same from the 36.
Use ISO 400 if needed, I got some good results with it.

Just be carefull to get a flash that is disigned for digital, many of the older ones can ruin your camera because of the high sync voltages.

If you use the onboard flash of an E: take off the sun-hood, it will be in the way.

Im also considering the metz 36, as seen here

I currently have an offical FL-20, would anyone recommend the above over the FL-20

Would I lose any features and what would I gain

I'm still undecided about the 36 but if you do go for it check out clifton cameras - its cheaper there!!

Thanks for the info, I think I'll try and find somwhere that will let me test it out. The current FL-20 I have is only a baby flash so anything should be better, but I dont want to buy anything that is less powerful

Finally Bought a Metz 36 AF-4 today and Im quite impressed with the quality of photos taken with it

The unit itself feels a little cheap, but for the price its quite big and powerful so Im happy with it

Does anyone else have one that they can share tips on how to get the best out of it ?

How are you finding the Metz 36 as I am thinking of getting one as a basic first time flash?

Hi Michael

To be totally honest, it didnt last me 2 weeks and I sent it back and bought a proper oly FL-36R and love it

I may just have had a dud one, as others have said they had no problems and rave about the metz 48

But from me I'd recommend spending a little more and getting a FL-36

Paid 106 incl p&p for my Fl-36 second hand so it doesn't have to be expensive.
