View Full Version : Banned from DP Review after only three posts.

I was in formed this morning that I am banned from DP Review. The reason being I dared to criticise a lens I was testing prior to purchase as being rather on the soft side and wondered if I just had a bad example or what. This led to a rather heated response from some members who accused me of being a troll and requested that my post be blocked immediately, which it was. I received a swift response from a Mod going by the name of Jerry Astro, to which I duly replied, obviously not to his satisfaction, and was informed that I was banned forthwith. He also informed me that I had set a new record for DPR in as much as I was banned after only three posts. Well at least I have something to show for my brief foray into DPR. Mother would be so proud. She always said I would amount to something, someday. Regards to all, Ian W.

It would be interesting if you could post a link to the posts on dpreview.

Jim

I would guess the posts have already been removed.

Congratulations Ian, that is indeed a notable achievement, even for DPR *chr.
The same Mod has just closed a thread on lens hoods too ! Maybe Sat. is a bad hair day over there. :D

Ooh, do give us a link to the posts (if they’re still there) so we can all see how naughty you’ve been.

That is a rave from the grave, I last posted on that forum in 2009

The screen layout is so confusing that I doubt I will spend much time there.

What specific lens were you testing?

I was sent to the 'sin bin' on the AP forum for daring to suggest that Canikon's lack of dust control measures was a serious oversight.

It probably didn't help that I lobbed this particular cluster bomb from the relative safety of the Olympus page which was always very heavily moderated for some reason.

I cannot remember which manufacturer took the outside back cover of AP magazine at the time.

Moderation on dpreview recently has been very inconsistent - they certainly need some, since many of the forums are full of trolling saddos.

Since I’m polycamerous, using Oly, Sony and Fugi cameras, I dip in to all 3 corresponding forums on dpreview: there’s a lot to be learned there as long as you stay away from the negativism and focus on the pearls to be found there.

One recurring theme on all the forums is how “Olympus/Sony/Fuji* fanboys are so sensitive to criticism”.
(*delete any 2 from 3)

No they aren’t. I can definitely say every forum attracts equally its trolls and fanboys (and normal users), and the same sterile arguments about insignificant minutiae of gear are perpetuated over thousands of wasted paragraphs every day. Some individuals clearly spend their whole lives doing that.

I would say this sensitivity applies to fanboys of all brands and predates internet fora by many decades.

Like Mark I am polycamerous (I like that) with a foot in Olympus, Mamiya, Canon and Nikon camps that I can think of for the moment. :o

They all have their limitations and it really doesn't bother me if somebody reminds me of that fact; but it seems that some get very hot and bothered. Maybe they should get out more?

Definitely!

I wish I could claim 'polycamerous' as my own, but I pinched it from Rick Sammon, the American photography teacher and podcaster. He's come up with all sorts of good phrases - like "My photographic speciality is not specialising" and "I've got OCD - Obsessive Cropping Disorder".

I think lying hidden within the origins and root cause of Fanboyitus Syndrome is the Black Cat Syndrome whereby fanboys would argue incessantly that "their cat is more black than yours".

Take a look at the polycamerous GetDPI forums for your Polycamerous needs.

I learn a lot from this forum! Now I know that I'm both polycamerous and have a very severe case of OCD *chr

Indeed, Nigel. A passion for photography protects against many less desirable pursuits.

TLAs can have many meanings.

It's a very different passion that results in STD's although in some cases, also related to photographic pursuits :D
