I was painting a door today, and to alleviate the tedium I switched the radio on. Against my better judgement I tuned into Classic FM which has been 'dumbed down' over the years*.

And guess what - they didn't play Rodrigo's 'Concierto de Aranjuez' - no, not even once! Furthermore, they didn't even play 'Arvo Fart's Execrable im Execrable'!

I told you you wouldn't believe it!

* I hate the way they try to appeal to the young by adopting the style of pop music presenters - eg "And now for chart topping Ludwig van Beethoven."

Bet they played Four Seasons at some point though?

Yes - AIRC!

I recon that they must rent a batch of CDs for a couple of months and play them repeatedly until they get a fresh batch.

I'm putting the top coat on the door today, so I'll see what goes with CFM!

CFM has always been obsessed with "charts" whereas Radio 3 is obsessed with Mozart. Get an internet radio!

I respectfully disagree with your opinion of Arvo Part's "Spiegel im Spiegel", that is a beautiful piece of music as is most of his "tintinabuli" output IMHO :). He was once memorably introduced on the radio as "Avro Prat" though so you may prefer to think of him by that name ;).

Enjoy the painting!

How about 30 plus postage? From what I remember it looks like new - I think I used it a couple of times.

It's the big backpack with 'Olympus' written on it.

Aren't the Three Degrees now considered to be classics?

If you want something else to listen to you can always try ABC Classic FM (Australia). http://www.abc.net.au/classic/ ;)

Thanks Ross - I gave it a try and like it.

Another good station I've listened to is Classical Music America:

https://www.3wk.com/player/playercma.php

The problem is that Amazon's Alexa won;'t tune to Classical Music America, saying "I can't select music by genre". Alexa accepts ABC Classic FM OK.

I don't find it all good though. It depends on the time of day & programming, but at least it's possible to check the guide & also listen to past programmes to.

That is a good find, thank you. They seem a bit light on organ music, which is surprising given the excellent instruments in Switzerland, but hey ho. :)

In other words, dumbing down to appeal to the 'lowest common denominator' (as they see it). :(

Ultimately it is all about playing whatever music maximises advertising revenue irrespective of its taste or quality. In this respect CFM is no different to social media firms who are very extremely reluctant to remove dangerous, distasteful or hateful material as long as it is gaining 'likes'.

Again, it works OK on Amazon's Alexa. Thanks Otto.

Maybe they've stopped playing Rodrigo's 'Concierto de Aranjuez', Barber's Adagio etc so that they have enough time for the Ads and the "Classic FM" jingles!

+1 is a new acronym I've learnt here and it's applicable to your link to ABC Classic FM. As you say, the program vares according to time of day. Tuning in on my pillow radio at 3:00am is not always restful, the other night they played bloody Schoenberg can you believe ... worse than listening to that fiddler from the Blue Mountains play paganini's caprices for solo violin. I dare say! :D
