I was getting to know my new camera and photography birds in the garden when I noticed this bird far away in the distance flying in circles and rising on a thermal. I believe it is a bird of prey, and possibly a buzzard of some sort, but can someone help identify it.

I am not showing the photos as great photos but just curious as we live inside the M25 on the Essex-London border and I would not expect a large bird of prey in this suburban area. It was taken with a 40-150mm PRO with teleconvertor attached but was far in the distance.

Thanks for your help

Mark

Hi Mark

Yes it is a Buzzard. Saw one over Roding Valley playing fields this morning. Sometimes your can hear them before you see them, a sort of mewing sound.
I think they nest out at the back of Theydon on the Woodlands Trust land.
See them a lot up there and at Abridge.
More and more around in the last few years.

Thanks Andy

I thought it might be circling over the fields but it was hard to decide where it was a far from my garden near Borders Lane. Great to know they are local to us!

Was quite impressed I got this much of a shot on from the 40-150mm with converter - very heavily cropped photo!

Thanks again.

Mark
