New 1 coins are to be introduced this year.

Also be aware of this (From then Bank of England website :-

The new polymer 5 note was issued on 13 September 2016. You can continue to spend paper 5 notes as usual until 5 May 2017. After this they will cease to be legal tender.

The way the pound is going it may not be worth the bother of cashing in old 1 coins nearer October!

I remember landing at Heathrow a decade or so ago and trying to buy something with the old 50p piece only to be informed that they hadn't been legal tender for some time. I've probably got some 1 coins and fivers somewhere.
