Somebody tell The Express, quickly! They could sell an extra few thousand issues to worried pensioners with this on the front page ;)

Crikey - just read that Express article. Glad I don't normally read junk journalism like that! Just look at the degree of hyperbole in it:

BRITAIN is about to be hit by the most savage winter freeze for six years with heavy snow, blizzards and a crippling -15C ‘ice glaze’ threatening weeks of chaos.

A colossal swathe of numbing air from the Arctic will trigger a sudden and extreme drop in temperatures within the next 10 days making Britain colder than Moscow, Iceland, Greenland and Scandinavia.

The most severe snowfall since 2010 could bring transport networks to a standstill while brutal cold will cause roads and pavements to ice-over.

I hate rags like The Express, The Mail and their ilk - it's them what screwed us over on Brexit!

On a more positive note - I used to be into aviation (gliders and light aircraft) and bumped into a lovely guy called Jack Harrison along the way. He served in the RAF and was an airline pilot after that before retiring from flying in the late 90s. He runs an excellent weather resource site for aviators that you can find here:

It can be quite technical, but you're more likely to get something accurate than on the pages of The Express. He's getting on a bit now, but he used to be a keen photographer too - you can find his gallery here:

There are some excellent MF monochrome shots of Great Yarmouth in his gallery which are quite superb as a documentary of the place when it still had a fishing industry.

Metcheck,,later yesterday:

"Added : Yesterday at 9:30
Apologies if you saw some rather strange wind speeds on the site this morning. It was caused by a corrupt data file and we are working to find out why this has happened twice in a fortnight and will get it fixed as soon as the hangover wears off. "

Yes, Nathan is a brilliant exponent of sensationalist journalism. Nobody can turn a simple "the weather will turn colder" into Armageddon quite like him. However if the Express etc would confine that sort of nonsense to weather forecasts we might not be in the mess we are in! My father took the Express all his adult life and refused to accept my opinion that it was rapidly descending into the rag it has become. He always took their weather forecasts as gospel too :).

The Mail and the Express are truly dreadful and as you say were an important source of misinformation in the EU Referendum.

The Express in particular continues to pump out what can only be described as propaganda of the most myopic kind twisting reports and financial information in spectacularly excruciating ways to support their stance.

Their weather articles are legendary. Killer cold and murderous heat are their favourite topics. Why can't the just accept that we have winters and it may get a bit chilly at times? Not that we have had a proper winter for ages thanks to global warming but -5C seems to be "killer arctic blast" as far as that pathetic rag is concerned.

Rant over and apologies *yes

Quite where is this "killer cold" coming from?

According to the Met Office temperatures at the North Pole have been hitting record highs recently, and the polar ice cap is melting rapidly, so there isn't much "killer cold" left to go around.

From what I have heard, even if the wind came directly from the pole it wouldn't be that cold right now. :(

It has all to do with the mysterious, El Nino, blame it on Him, the Christ Child - it absolves us all from responsibility for climate change. *yes O:)

We found the washing drying times on Metcheck today. It always gives between 4 and 4 1/2 hours, even when heavy rain is forecast.
