Olympus UK's seasonal festive photo search is on.It's a social media challenge:

"Today we’re launching our search for 2016’s Christmas Number One… photo, that is!

From Dec 16 to Christmas Day we’ll be counting down our 10 favourite photos taken by YOU over the past 12 months. But to build our chart, we need to see your best work!

And because we’re feeling festive, the photographer behind the picture we pick as Christmas Number One will win the Olympus camera of their choice! That’s right – just choose the camera you’ve got your heart set on and if we love your photo the most, that Olympus camera will be YOURS in 2017.

To be in with a chance, upload your favourite photo from 2016 to Facebook, Twitter or Instagram, and tag in #TopOfTheShots so we see your entry. In the caption make sure you tell us a little about the picture, the settings you used, and – most importantly – the Olympus camera you’d like to win if you’re chosen as No.1!

You’ve got until midday on Thurs 15 December to get your photo in, and our Top 10 Countdown will start the day after – finishing on Christmas Day when we reveal our Christmas Number One…

Don’t wait to get your shots in – if you already know what your best photo is from the past 12 months, get it online today!

*T&Cs in About Us section"

I wonder if we can get some e-group members' work recognised?! :)

Pity it's submissions by social media only.... ah well, I guess I can fire up my Instagram account.

You should, Paul, you must be in with a chance. I've barely taken a picture during the last 12 months and certainly nothing worth entering. Maybe next year. As Ian said, it would be nice to get some E-group members recognised. *chr

I think that I have quite a few that I consider good enough to do well (not necessarily win mind you!). One won me DPI of the Year in my club a few weeks back so that'll likely be that one.

Well I was about to enter, then I read the T&Cs. Which specifically exclude opting for an EM-1 MkII should you win.

Not that I would have won, but as that's what I would have wished for (already having the Pen-F), I don't see any point now! Just have to keep saving through next year.... :(

Oh, that rather dampens the mood. I wonder why they did that, are they so short of money?

I was afraid of that. It would have to be the Pen F for me then.

Not entirely sure. But there's a thread on Olympus UK page into which you can post your entry as a 'comment'

Had it been possible, I would have opted to wait a year or two for the E-M5 Mk 3 (I assume there will be one eventually). As there seemed no way to enter without some sort of social media account it was all moot anyhow. Good luck to those who entered.

Well, I entered and asked Santa for an E-M1ii. As it appears the Elves has not made enough of them I guess my entry will be disqualified! Oh well, I doubt they'd have picked me anyhow...

That is a spectacularly good photograph, taken in simply wonderful light. Surely if it is chosen they will just ask you to name an alternative prize. :)

Try a search on Olympus UK. If you look on twitter you might find it by searching on #topoftheshots.

Thanks. It's weird, I'm a software engineer by training and have been involved in software development all my working career (since 1982) - but I really struggle with Facebook. I find the site layout illogical and lacking a consistent mental model I can get my head around. I'm confused by "Timeline", "Home" and the various things I see when I search for stuff. Then it seems images I post disappear at random - there one moment and relegated to a url the next. Maybe I'm just too old for this social networking stuff!

Paul,

The way that Facebook jumbles up the timeline is infuriating (that's now way to describe it, others are less polite)! I've read it depends on how you apply likes. I stick with it as I like some of the feeds from UK weather forecasts etc. but it seems so random!!

Twitter is much easier as it stay chronological. Instagram used to be like that but now that jumbles things up too!

I thought I saw your post on Facebook a few days ago!

You're too kind John. I doubt I'll get a mention, let alone win. But if I do, I'll raise my glass in your honour!

BTW - how is the new hip going?

I have been following the announcements each day and I believe it would help if Olympus tagged the announcements consistently. I tried to generate a search which just displays the #TopOfTheShots winners but John's shot was not tagged that way so is missing on some searches. The best I can suggest is to look at their Facebook page at 6pm each day and you will see the day's announcement.

https://www.facebook.com/OlympusUK/

You can look back down the posts on that page and see the shots from 10 to 6 so far. In amongst the other posts and announcements they make.

I'm looking forward to a post Facebook world! :)

I'm no FB fan and it annoys me too but surely they could just put all the shots in an album on FB and then you could just click on it to see them on their own.

When testing web interfaces (for testing is my job) the term 'busy' does often come up and Facebook would be a prime example.

Anyway main thing is additional congrats to Mr John Burns, AKA The Musicman!
