I know this is not software - but it is about the things you put your software on

There is a major spate of hard drive failures of the new 1TB drive from Seagate. After a short period the drive becomes invisible to the computer.

For more info see the Seagate user forums if you have recent Seagate drives

Thank for the warning, we all have external HD's.

Not a surprise..

I've always used Seagate Barracuda's and they have been and still are superb untill a few months ago when I bought a new drive which failed, then got a replacement which failed and then that was replaced and it failed.

Since Seagate and Maxtor are now the same I will never buy another seagate drive.

Western Digital for the win :D

Trouble is that, over the years, every manufacturer seems to go through good/bad patches. What's important is how they go about recovering bad situations - Seagate do appear to be being upfront about this.

Garrie - if your drives became invisible to the computer then this is the symptom of the current problem where the drive bios closes down

Go to the Seagate web sites and chase down to see if your drive comes from the range of suspect drives.
