Ours died when we went over to Vista and we've only just replaced it with a combined scanner/printer which seems OK. It's an HP Photosmart C4280.

It isn't the top of the range, and I haven't tried it for printing pictures yet, because it needs a different ink cartridge, but it certainly seems fine for letters and pages from books.

Our "want to get" list includes a good photo printer, but they're always too good to use for everyday sort of tasks.

Epson 4490 Photo works well for me. It's a bit bulkier on the worktop than I'd like, but it has a top light for slides and negs. Bought it last spring from Camera World, but I can't remember the price!

I've got a 4490 which I use for slides but for ordinary work my Lexmark X4580 does the trick.
