The Isle of Rhum, in the Inner Hebrides, is a National Nature reserve.

It has been found that there are few species of earthworm there but that the common species Lumbricus terrestris, being free from predation, grows much larger than elsewhere in Britain.

Until Charles Darwin made observations in his garden, it was thought that earthworms were pests. He found that they aerated the soil and turned it over on a small scale.
