View Full Version : Life without power

A couple of weekends ago our power tripped out, and when restarted the fuse box started making load crackling noises. After a fraught three hours trying to find an electrician who met their advertised 1-2hr 24/7 callouts (including Which and Checkatrade rated companies) we finally got someone via our insurance company. Sadly they condemned the electricity supply as the box had been poorly wired (another saga) and it took over three days to get power restored.

At this point I decided that I did need to move the Lightroom library from my iMac hard drive to a portable drive as I would at least still be able to access the library from my MacBook.

I have been using Lightroom since last November so have almost a year's worth of photos on the hard drive.

Does anyone know if there is a safe or best way to move the photos so the portable catalogue is maintained with all the photos retaining their links to the catalogue settings (I think these are the .xmp sidecar files that link the Lightroom instructions to my original files).

Hi Amanda, I am probably the worst person for computer advice. I can only tell you what I have done with my iMac. I went to the apple store (not the cheapest alternative) and sought advice and purchased two Gdrive external hard drives. On connection to the iMac the iMac recognises the hard drive. You can then backup your info to it manually or it can be set for automatic. if your iMac. Is like mine it is a 1tb internal harddrive you will find you will soon be at least half full this is when you will notice it starting to slow up. I do not use Lightroom or adobe although I have ps installed. I use aperture and iPhoto, in fact I have them on the external drives as well. I have about 11 libraries all on the external drives. With only one library on the iMac which is the family photos so as the wife can easily get to to them as and when. The second Gdrive is daisy chained to the first Gdrive. My iMac is now 5 yrs old and creaking a little! Like I said at the beginning I am no technophobe and actually have a love hate relationship with anything to do with computers and there expense.
Kind regards mike

Thanks Mark. I'm going to The Mall tomorrow so I might have to pop in (as long as I don't stop too long near the Apple watches)!
