View Full Version : Challenge 63 - Light Fantastic

1st December 2014, 11:26 PM
Right then...after considering numerous options, I've decided to focus on lights for this challenge - the only proviso being that your photo must include a man made light of some sort...this isn't the thread for amazing sunlight no matter how beautiful it might be!

So...i'm thinking fairy lights (as we're fast approaching Christmas there should be no shortage of those!), vehicle light streaks, atmospheric street lamps, some funky bokeh, neons, lasers...you get the idea!

I'm slightly terrified at the prospect of choosing a winner, but i'm really looking forward to see your entries.

Closing date: Midnight (UK time) on Monday 15th December 2014.

Here are the rules, which should be copied and pasted into the opening post of each round:-

1) The winner of each round becomes the Curator of the next challenge and is resposible for setting the theme and making final judgement of 1st, 2nd and 3rd places. Ideally he/she will make a few comments concerning what they liked about the winning pictures and why they were chosen, but this is not compulsory.

2) A separate thread should be started for comments with each new round and all discussions should take place there, not in the main thread, which should feature pictures entered for the competition only.

3) Each round should be open for entries for two weeks, with the Curator posting the results as soon as possible after entries have closed and the winner setting a new challenge as soon as possible sfter that.

4) If for any reason a Curator is unable to complete judging their challenge, or a winner is unable or unwilling to become the next Curator, they must contact a moderator immediately so that alternative arrangements can be made.

5) The Curator's decision is final and cannot be disputed. The challenge is designed to be a light-hearted and fun way to encourage friendly competition.

6) All entries must have been taken on an Olympus digital camera, including compacts. Third party lenses on E-System bodies are acceptable. The Exif data should be preserved for every entry. The exception is for processing techniques where the exif for the final image is lost, i.e. for montages, HDR, focus stacking, etc and in this case all that is required is for one of the original images used to be available to the Curator to check Exif, if needed. It is not anticipated that this will be needed except in the case of a complaint from a forum member. Remember, this is not a competition with prizes at stake and the main purpose is to encourage members to showcase their favourite shots whilst having a bit of fun and friendly rivalry, at the same time demonstrating what a talented bunch we all are!

7) There are no time limits on when a picture was taken, provided it meets all other criteria.

8) Only one entry per challenge, please. If you want to withdraw an entry and replace it with another, that's OK, but you must make it clear in the post containing your replacement picture that this is what you intend doing.

9) The Curator cannot enter his or her own challenge.

Good luck and let's try and repeat the superb standard set in challenge 62!!

Well...I guess it's time for me to make a decision then..

Thanks for all the entries - again it's a tough ask to pick a winner from them.

I have to keep reminding myself it comes down to which pleases my eye and not which photo is 'the best', so with that in mind...my top 3 in reverse order have to be:

Paul - Moving Walkway. I'm not usually a big fan of shots made up entirely of motion blur, but I keep coming back to the strong lead in lines and the way the lights make the whole corridor look metallic. I also can't figure out whether it's an escalator or a level walkway, which just makes me like it more!

Jim - Brighton Beach. A well exposed and atmospheric shot, and I love the eerie looking pier ruins in the background...and I really want to know what's in the box!

Scott - Light Streaks (in an unknown town!). Basically this is a shot i'm horribly envious of! For me, it's light streaks done right... Plenty of interest aside from the lights, and exposed to perfection. I almost knew it would be my winner the moment it was posted...a cracking image all round.

So...over to you Scott. I'm sure you'll get another batch of corkers to choose between!

Well done Scott. Lovely image!

Well done Scott. What's in the box? I have no idea but the local bill posters love it!

Oh thank you so much guys, just logging on today and must say I'm pretty shocked tbh.Im only just getting back into the forum as I feel now 2 years into my photography journey I can post an image with some level of confidence.Again trying to get time for landscape type of work is hard as im always studio based now doing kids & family's,anyway enough about me and I should have said that this is good old Glasgow at Charing Cross.Pretty much in the heart of Glasgow as it has Scotlands main motorway the M8 running right through the middle.to my recollection not many cities have a motorway so close meaning your never to far from anything. As soon as I took this image I knew I was going to like it and it didn't disappoint.Once again Thank you and pleased to win at the first ever time of trying. So how long do I have to think of my criteria? Almost sure i know what I'm going for though *chr

Well done from me as well. I was pleased to see Scott's entry win as I love these images. I agree with themosttogain this is a top class example of low light streaks.

16th December 2014, 07:20 PM
Good one Scott.....i didn't really have a natural 'light' one to post, so well done...i really like this challenge so I hope you have your thinking cap for the next challenge,as long as it's not hills !! I'd struggle here in Suffolk..;)

16th December 2014, 09:23 PM
Well done Scott (and Jim and Paul) and thanks to Alan for running it. By the way Scott 'Hills' would be good.. :D

Yes, Scott has been in contact with me and I am aware of his computer problems. It was probably a good idea to have a break from the competition over Christmas and New Year anyway, starting afresh now we are in 2015. Hope your problems are soon sorted, Scott, at times computers are the bane of my life. :D

My hectic work life is back to normal,my computer just won't go into the Internet apart from facebook strangely,I stupidly gave my daughter a shot off my computer.Anyway I shall visit the local library.

Scott, if you are still having computer problems I can start the competition thread on your behalf - just confirm the subject. :)
