View Full Version : Lens mount very 'stiff'

Hi,

The lens mount on my Olly is very stiff/has a lot of friction when using lenses with metal mounts, it feels like the threads need greasing or something (obviously I'm not going to do this lol). Is this normal? My only comparison is my A77 and the lenses glide on that as though there on bearings or something.

Cheers.

P.S. The shutter is pretty loud too, again is this normal?

Certainly some lenses are tighter than others on my E-M1. I'm not worried about it and I don't intend to do anything about it.

Thanks, as long as it's normal it doesn't bother me :)

When I first had my E-PL5 the mount was very tight but seems to have eased slightly with use, I wouldn't worry about it.

Great thanks. I guess I can put my 'concerns' to bed and continue to enjoy my camera :)

Hi I. Think that the tightness is probably due to the weather sealing on em 5 and em1 bodies more so if weather sealed lenses are used, as I find the none weather sealed lenses are less stiff, than weather sealed ones.

Thanks. Are the 45mm f1.8 and Panny 20mm f1.7 Version II weather sealed then?

No, and on my E-M1 the tightest lenses are the non-sealed ones, especially the 45mm., which also happens to be one of my oldest lenses.

Yeah, the 45mm is the stiffest on mine, followed by the Panny 20mm (version II), 14-42mm EZ, and then the least stiff is my 40-150mm which is a plastic mount.

The 45 is even stiff on my old G1.

The only ones that are stiff on my EM5 are weather sealed ones.

Weather sealing aside, it sounds like a tolerance problem to me, minimum of camera and maximum of lens, or vice versa. Not forgetting it's 3-dimensional, so a clash in any one axis would cause a problem.
Out of interest, I interfaced a second hand Oly 12 mm to my EM5 and EP5, and although it engages and locks it needs that extra bit of torque compared to other lenses that I own. The less hard of the two will wear to compensate, but where does the residue end up - well that could be a concern, but I'm not that anal.

One word - production tolerances.

Well yes, but production tolerance limits need to be considered as part of the design. There's no point specifying +/- half an ant's what-not, if production can only work to a +/- a full ant's do-dah
