Just shot a couple of close up carnation shots with the 12-50mm. I couldn't remember at the time how to do macro mode :o (well it was after a couple of glasses of wine) Anyway I was pretty pleased how well it handled the task and at how well the reds were coped with too.

And a closer crop

No pp only cropping. I'm sure the sharpness could be improved with a bit of tweaking but I was pretty impressed with how the kit lens performed.
Apologies too as these look a bit soft on the forum as I compressed the files a bit heavily to post.

As you have shown, Phill, the 12-50mm is a versatile and solid performer; the important thing is not to expect too much from it. There's a reason why it costs less than half the price of a Panny 12-35mm or Olympus 12-40mm, but even so the results are very acceptable.

I'm not entirely convinced that mine is quite as sharp as my Panny 14-45mm but that is just a subjective feeling, not the result of any practical, objective comparison test. For financial reasons one of them really should be sold and when I can bring myself to do it I suspect it will be the Panny, which actually says quite a lot in favour of the rather unglamorous 12-50mm. If only it had a maximum aperture at the long end of, say, f4.5 rather than f6.3.

This was taken with the 12mm 50mm in macro mode I think it is brilliant you can see all the facets of the eye, this fly was about 5mm to 6mm in size.

PS your flowers look great maybe give a little sharpening they usually sharpen up quite well or if the software you use, uses micro contrast that will crisp the edges very well without sharpenning and you dont have to worry about sharpenning artifacts.

I think that its major benefits are the range and it's lightness. Yes, it is a bit long and slow but with usable high ISOs on my EPL5 and EM1 that is not a big problem. At around £120 used it is a bit of a bargain in my opinion.
Your fly shot is a stunner Dave!

Thanks Dave, In the right hands the lens may produce a little better, the fly was taken hand held and I'm not the steadiest on me feet balance wise.

I think that the lens can produce some excellent macro its onl down fall I feel is its not quit Macro as it is 1:2 or 1:3 not sure which now put a 10mm extention Tubes you get pretty close to 1:1.

Oh I entered the fly image in a club competition earlier this year, the judge remarked "I know nothing about macro" , then said "it was nice and sharp on the eyes, it's a pitty you didn't increase the fstop I would have liked to see the lot more in focus" at f16 I think you are about maxed out for focus but what does he know.

Weather sealed too. Don't know why more of the prime lenses aren't.

The 12-50 kit lens is my go-to <shudder> lens in the rain.

Of course you should have focus stacked ;)
With regard to judges Dave I would quite like to come up to Ross CC for a comp. I think we talked about the possibility of this a couple of years back.
