I am thinking about buying some filters for some extra effects like a starburst and a red filter for black & white work.

Is red the best one for b&w work?

What do you think about filters?

Do you use filters for that effect?

Hi Gareth

The only filters I use on camera are:

1 - Skylight filter (to protect the lenses)
2 - ND Grad filters
3 - Polarising filters

Most of the other effects can be accomplished with Photoshop.

Depends what effect you are looking to achieve. Red will darken both green and blue. The effect is dramatic and is popular in architectue. Yellow would darken the sky only slightly.

I think nowadays for Black and White it is best to shoot in full colour then break the image into 3 mono images - one for each colour channel in post processing. You then mix the 3 images together to get the balance you want - effectively giving you any colour/strength filter you want and avoiding slowing the lens.
