Just been chatting to another journalist over breakfast and he's heard from a reliable source that the new E-System camera we saw yesterday is to be called the E-A1, which is quite an interesting departure from the traditional E-System naming convention.

Pix and initial report from yesterday:

Interesting, that almost suggests that it has something that requires it to be named differently. There was something else in the official statement that sounded a bit strange but I can't remember off hand what it was. IIRC it almost suggested that the E-A1 was being developed to run along side regular 4/3rds.

What about calling it the AE-1 ... or has that already been used???

I would still expect it to be called E-30 or alike, the E-3 was called E-P1 when shown as a prototype and on the good old leaked PDF.

E-P1 = Pro = E-3
E-A1 = Advanced or Amateur = E-30

Olympus has a very long history of naming the cameras in series of single, double and triple digits:

OM 1, 2, 4, 3 & 10, 30, 40, & 707, 101
L 1,3,5 & 10, 20, 40
E 10, 20 & 1, 3 & 300, 500, 330, 400, 410, 510, 520

I doubt that E30 would be used as it wouldn't fit in the double digit series type.

As it seems to be just below the E-3, I think E-2 could be on the cards
