Take a look at the thread

re a question sent to Olympus US about the 11 AF points and when to use them. A reply from Olympus is copied which is quite illuminating.

It also references the FAQ at
http://www.olympusamerica.com/cpg_section/cpg_support_faqs.asp?id=1323

which appears to be a living document and so is worthwhile monitoring for new information.

Thanks for the info Derek.

This certainly answers why all targets is hopeless. I guess from this that reducing to 5 targets and tracking the subject is the only way we stand a chance useing C-AF for wildlife shots. I wonder how Canon achieve their performance then? It does not seem that Olympus have developed C-AF enough which is a surprise as they are trying to get into the Pro market.

I need to see masses off flying birds to put into practice what I have gathered in the last weeks or so from the web. I expect that the even if the subject is on the ground one can use the Dynamic single target if one de-selects the focus points on the bottom row (assuming the subject is halfway up the frame)

Glad the pointer was some use to you.

Derek

That is very helpful and may even persuade me to set up a my mode for bird in sky mode. As you say it will be interesting to see how a good shooter will use the CAF variations with a flock of starlings as against a single bird flying. I think I see the logic but it seems too hard to switch between the setups. A dial to turn would help.

I thought the insight on the monitoring the forums was enlightening.
