View Full Version : RAW file reference manual?

Does anyone have a pointer to a document with a reference section to how EXIF tags and values are stored in a RAW file?

The topic is posted for E5, but is likely valid for most E- cameras.

If nobody comes up with an answer in the meanwhile, I'll look at a raw file with OD (octal dump) on a linux machine, and search for the string 'E5'.

Thanks Jim,

I did have a look at ORF files using a binary file editor.

The issue is that tags identifiers have binary type and most have binary (non-ASCII) values and unless the values are readable to human it is hard to read/decode the file contents and find out where to look for the tags.

So my question is if there exists a reference documentation describing how ORF files are structured with respect to tags and how to interpret tag values. Such a documentation exists, the question is if there exists copies public available. (Does not need to be supported by Olympus, I am not planning any commercial application).

The EXIF data in a RAW file is actually held in the JPEG image that is included in the RAW file.

I did a Google of the phrase "exif tags in RAW file" and apart from the Wiki response this response seemed to give quite useful info

On the Mac in Finder I did a Get Info on a RAW file and was able to see the Exif data as well as the JPEG.

Hi Tord
Did you find any links? The best guide seems to be ExifTool by Phil Harvey.
Click on the Olympus/Epson links for oly specific tags.

You have to be pretty keen to want to extract this level of detail from files, good luck.
