Hi Guys

What would be the best portrait lens for my outdated E-410

Just get the 50mm f2 ZD macro. It will double as a great portrait and macro lens. Razor sharp too. Focus is a bit slow the the quality more than makes up for that.

Thanks Dave

What are these retailing at the mo and can you get second hand ones?

New it is about 580 with used prices 350/400 but you may get one cheaper. Alternatively just get a 14-54 for about 180 used price which will give you a good portrait focal length and quality plus the flexibility of the wide angle end for other stuff. But I guess that you are after a prime lens and the 50mm ZD is the way to go.
An old 50mm f1.8 OM lens wouldn't be so good optically but would be way cheaper (10/20). You may have focus issues with it with your E-410 due to the small viewfinder screen.
Top glass doesn't come cheap I am afraid. I was lucky, I got my mint S/H 50mm f2 for 220 on ebay a few years ago. I was very happy!

Ben... I wish 350 or 400.... Mine's on ebay for 210 starting bid... I'm not expecting much more than 250.
