I love my 70-300, an absolute bargain for the price and it is possible to hand hold it with the E510!

I like the Sigma - is slightly soft wide open at the long end and needs to be stopped down to f8 to give of its best. Not unusual with long zooms, I believe. However, I believe I heard a suggestion recently that this lens was being discontinued in 4/3rds format.

There are several examples in here: http://www.flickr.com/groups/sigmafourthirds/

If you do a search on this forum you should find several helpful discussions.

That sigma is discontinued. It not bad a lens as mentioned you need to stop down to f8..which makes it even darker. I do not recommend this lens for non IS bodies. It really a challenge to hand hold at 800mm (FOV) and this lens is not lightweight. It weights in at 2.8LBS.

The 70-300 f/4-5.6 is one feather weight in comparison. Sharp with fantastic DOF..and relatively cheaper.

Well I've posted 64 pictures in the gallery using the 135-400, mostly/all with the ec1.4 attached as well. There has also been discussion of this lens I think in previous threads. Other members have also used/posted with their examples of the lens.

I dont think later examples suffer particularly from softness, but the lens does need to be driven by a camera that will support the higher iso values (400+) if you want to capture nature shots. It is a big lump, especially with the hood on (which you need to protect the lens unless you use a filter) and has a fair weight, but I have no problem hand holding it.

Recommend it, well yes, I have before on this forum, but with the caveat it is best suited to the larger faster Olympus bodies.

It might be 'discontinued', possibly because it is overshadowed by the 50-500 in most peoples perceptions, but Digital Depot still lists it as 'in-stock'.

I too recommend this lens and would point you at a number of my posts that show it is a fantastic lens.

Nick has more than I do so have a look at his posts too.

I think the discontinued line is not correct in UK - Sigma have a lot of content here http://www.sigma-imaging-uk.com/quicklinks/fourthirds.htm

I also know it is superb on the sony mount too! A friend has one..

best wishes
