Hi Guys

Bottom line - I can't afford the Olympus rig.

Can I ask what you guys are using? I'd like to fit it to the 50mm f2, but also to the 50-200 (non swd).

Considering the distance at which I can use the 50-200, an LED ring doesn't seem to be powerful enough.

How about the Metz MS-1.

Mine seems to work OK

Or for under 80.00 you could try this. It is not an LED and you can control the output independently on both sides of the flash. Only downside it is in China. I have ordered a LED ring flash just waiting for it to come, hope it works ok.

I'm another satisfied Metz ring flash user.

Love this place - thanks guys

Re the metz - I want to use it with the 50-200. Does the additional weight at the end of the lens make auto focus difficult?

Ceri, not sure what make but Peter D has one on his sigma 150 - if you send him a pm or email I am sure he will be only too pleased to share his info :)

Good question.

In theory the Metz should be used on lenses with internal focussing, as of course it is extra weight for the focus motor above what is designed for. So the Sigma 150 is OK but not the Sigma 105 (where the front element moves to focus).

I believe the 50-200 is internal focussing - but I'm sure someone will confirm - so although there will be an extra weight on the barrel when zoomed it should still be OK.

I can't see the weight of the Metz being a problem. It's quite light which is helped by using only 2 AAA cells. If weight is still a concern, it can be reduced by using lithium cells which are much lighter than others.

Anyone tried one of these?

They are fairly cheap but are they any use?

That's the one I have - works fine on the E620.

I have the Metz as well although I did try LED lighting. The big advantage of flash is of course is the short duration which is ideal for moving subjects but as has been stated the extra power it provides is also essential especially if you need to use small f-stops for DoF. the set from China looks to be good value but overall of course the whole unit is much heavier than the Metz.

So a vote for the Metz here.

I hope it's of use to someone.

Don't forget that OM macro flash equipment can also be used (although without TTL control). John Foster has an excellent write-up here: http://biofos.com/cornucop/flash_e.html and there's a few T10 ring flashes on the auction site just now. 181022198985 includes the required T Power Control, has 2 days to run, with no bids. Looks good value for 70.

The OM Macro flashes fit 55mm and 49mm filter threads - you might need adaptors to use on a modern lens (good reason to use an old lens).
