Had my first proper go shooting macro with the new OM-D today. I sold my Canon macro lens on Friday, so all I have currently is the kit lens in macro mode (0.36x magnification, or 0.72x full frame equivalent) and an old Canon 35-80 reversed. At 35mm with the focus racked out I get approximately 1:1 magnification (2:1 full frame equivalent). Its manual focus all the way

I think I stopped the aperture on the 35-80 down to about f/8 using my previous Canon, so its pretty dark. However the Live View boost option worked really well, ensuring I had a bright enough screen to manual focus easily enough.

I also don't have a proper flash yet so I'm only using the small flash included with the camera, but was pleasantly surprised at the quality of the light with this today. Hoping to get an FL-36R soon to provide a more diffused light source

The OM-D is a dream for taking macro. The screen is bright and clear, and generally good to manual focus with. In body stabilisation on a macro lens is great. For subjects that stood still and where I felt stable enough I used the magnify option on Fn2 button, zoomed into 5x allowed me to nail the shot almost every time. Technique here was to work out composition, then Fn2 to bring up the green box, reposition it to where I wanted to focus, Fn2 again to zoom, half press shutter to engage IBIS. Then rock back and forwards slowly to get it perfectly in focus (insect eyes etc), and shoot. It helped to have the setting that keeps the zoomed in view when the shutter is half way down.

The results using the above technique were way better than I might have had previously, its hard to miss the focus when you can see it so clearly at 5x zoom. Any more zoom is too much for macro, there is just too much going on in the viewfinder when the slightest movement is magnified so much.

Manual settings as usual, shutter speed 1/250 and ISO 400 for most of the shots, left the flash on normal mode

I'm not sure the best way to post pics from my flickr stream, here is a link to the entire set

Lets try a couple of pics here:

There's more on the set in flickr. I'm still going to buy the 60mm macro when it comes out - I miss being able to use auto focus to initially set the focus on an insect. With manual there is too much rocking initially and it can scare the insects away easily. Also nice to be able to go straight into photographing larger objects (my kids) if needed

Excellent results. I'm ironing out a similar technique for macro, i need to magnify. 5x noted. :)

I'm hoping that 60mm macro appears before the bugs all disappear.
