View Full Version : Are there any alternatives to the FL-CB05 out there?

I'm looking for either a good price on a FL-CB05 or a good alternate as I really begrudge spending over 60 on what is afterall a pirce of cable to connect contacts at one end to the same on the other ...

I'm into cave photography and in himid atmospheres on-camera flash is no good at all. I;m having to use my old non-dedicated leads at present so missing out on some useful functionality

I remember when flashguns used to come with a sensible length cable with them ... sigh !

Andy

Hi,

if you can do a bit of soldering then the link below might help.

If the extension is not needed the Canon cord is perfect for Oly, and at half price of the Oly cable, here in Sweden.

It works perfectly in all modes, and even the locking pin fits any E-system camera.

Anyway, maybe Canon has a longer one as well for those who don't want or cannot use a soldering iron.

My cable looks like this today:

I used the connectors to get the flexibility I wanted. I can still use the cable similarily as before, even if it got a bit uglier, as you see.

Hey OlyFlyer - can you confirm for me please that this is the same item...?

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Off-Camera-Shoe-Cord-Canon-OC-E3-replacemnt-580EX-430EX_W0QQitemZ330205497050QQihZ014QQcategoryZ4851 5QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

If so, I am going to order one... thanks.

Sorry, I can't confirm. The one I use is the original Canon cord, the one on eBay seems to be a copy. How good it is, I can't say. But if it works on Canon it should work on Oly.

I have just purchased a clone of the Canon OC-E3 cable from an Ebay seller.

The item that I purchased was:

It works very well. I connected the cable to my E-400 and my FL-50. When I adjusted the lens focal length, the flash changed is zoom settings as well.

The cable has a label that I removed, and now it is a generic cable.

The end of the cable that the flash gun connects too can also be mounted on a tripod. The construction is a mixture of plastic and metal.

I paid slightly over 22 delivered. It took 4 days to arrive.

I'd be very interested to know how wide and deep the flash mount end of the Canon cord actually is...

I'm currently using my FL-CB05 on my old Oly Power Bounce Grip 2, but the flash end is too wide to fit inside the shoe mount @ 44mm. The shoe mount is only 29mm across at it's narrowest, by 25mm front to back. I've currently mounted the FL-CB05 with a hot shoe adaptor, which works but looks a bit Heath Robinson with the FL50 perched on it. The flash end in OlyFlyer's photos looks a good bit smaller than the Oly version.

Advice greatly appreciated!

Jessops do a cheap own-brand Canon Off-camera cable for 30 or so. That provides full TTL function on Oly cameras and it's longer than the Oly version. Of course, the folks in my local Jessops didn't know that but, hey, that's what forums like this are for, right?

Are you sure that is the right price for a fake (sorry, third party compatible)?

Advice greatly appreciated!I can measure it for you tonight if you need more details. If you have the possibility, you can also visit a store which sells the cord and I am sure they let you try it.

Thanks - that would be really great if you could please. I cleverly fell down some stairs a few weeks ago and am still recovering (and I was sober - which makes it even more annoying), so I can't drive as far as far as the nearest dealer who would have one ATM.

Hmm... I'm sure the Jessops cord was cheaper last year...

Width between the sides: 28mm
Length between the cable fixture and the other side: 30mm
Height from the bottom to the very top: 28mm

As you can see, unfortunatelly the cable sticks out to the front. I would prefer it the other way round. Anyway, what is difficult to see is that at the bottom there is also a 1/4" screw hole as well, easy to fix to any tripod as well.

The cable works very well for me, even after my modification.

i know this is an old thread but i bought TTl flash cord to use my fl36 and my E300 on E-bay for about 20 inc postage it says it is for the Olympus camera /flash combination (not a converted canon) and it has worked perfectly so far
