View Full Version : Enjoyable Day at Focus on Sunday

I had an enjoyable day at Focus On Imaging on Sunday although the drive up was rather unpleasant with the amount of rain coming down and spray everywhere :(

I had a quick look at the OM-D which is very neat and I have to say that the EVF is rather good. I had a pleasant chat with benvendetta as we looked at the camera and he was interested in how well it would focus with 4/3rds lenses. The staff on the stand helpfully found an adaptor (MMF-2 I think ) and we tried it with my 14-54 Mk 1. Focussing seemed to be unexpectedly quick and there was no hunting or failure to lock on, very impressive *yes

Here's a few of shots I took as I wandered about. First, the models who were posing on the Olympus stand, but taken from the live view of the chap in front of me as the E-5 is too heavy to lift that high ;)

The main man (I think) on the Olympus stand doing a little dance routine with accessory broom.

I liked the contrast between the young lady sat on the empty plot and the busy crowd behind her.

It is the first time I've visited the show but I will definitely be going again in years to come :)

Cheers,

Nice impressions of the show John. All I seemed to get shots of was Ola, must have been a bit distracted ;). I wonder how many other forum users I didn't bump into at the show. Maybe next year we can get organised and meet up to eat sandwiches or something.

Oooh, I don't know how MarkThackara is going to react to that - but I will enjoy showing him! :D

Let's see your video of his broom dance John!
Did they not think to give him a hideous psychadelic unitard with flares?

I went on Monday (slightly less crowding I think). Managed a hands on with the EM 5 (amazingly dinky, but great to hold). The reps were well informed and dealt with requests well, including fitting a visitor's 14-54 Mk 1 to check focusing action (seems a recurring request). I must say that for architectural or landscape photography, the focusing performance of this combination was very useable. Like JohnGG I was pleasantly surprised by the evf quality. I succumbed to the show offers and ordered one from Jacobs. It's only money...

Hi Dave I didn't know there were any others on here from Derby. I was so close to doing the same as you but resisted in the end. I'd be happy to hold your bag whilst you try it out though :D
Congrats on the purchase.

I also managed to get my hands on a EM 5 on Monday Black body with the grip. Reminded me so much of my OM4, but smaller. seemed to handle very well. Autofocus was very fast and the EVF was clear and bright. Not for me as most my photography is with longer lens.

If I'd succumbed to the show offers, I'd have succumbed to my wife's left hook later that evening :o

I have to admit though that the OM-D EM-5 is the first M4/3rds camera that has tempted me to reach for my wallet!

Nice to meet you too John. Like the first image. I saw the girl sat there on the floor. I thought at the time that she had had a ...................nice mobile. I wish I had taken my E-3 with me now.

Hi Phil
We are a little thin on the ground here I think. I'm looking forward to getting to grips with the EM5. At Focus, I just needed to feel it in the hand and check out the evf. As it was up to expectations and the dealers had show offers (case, battery, wrist strap and delivery to my local shop as well as the bundled battery holder/grip), so I went for it. I shoot raw + jpeg and I'm counting on Oly quality jpegs to encourage me to go on and develop the raw to get the maximum possible out of them. My GH2 is a terrific camera but the jpegs don't tend to give me quite the buzz. I still like the output from my E3 in spite of the strong anti alias filter but it's a heavy setup to carry now. Thanks for the offer to be my 'bag holder' I'll bear you in mind.

Hi Ian,

I'd be interested to know how he reacts, I hope he takes it well :)

Quite a few people on the forum seem to have placed their orders for the EM-5 either at the show or as soon as it was announced. Do you have any feedback yet from Olympus on how they feel the launch and the stand at the show have gone and whether they are satisfied with the volume of orders?

Cheers,

JohnGG
