The e-group Bank Holiday Challenge

Thanks to those who responded yesterday with some great suggestions, I have taken a look and here are the chosen themes/subjects/categories for the bank holiday challenge; 1 - The Bank Holiday Weather
2 - Something you did not expect to see!
3 - Yellow
4 - Laughing/Enjoyment
5 - It's dinner time!
6 - 04:00 in the morning!
7 - A Clock Tower
8 - Something cute!
9 - A Candid shot of someone, anyone but this must be... outside heheheh... wicked aren't I...?)
10 - Music
Finally... as a tie breaker just in case, please can you complete the following caption... "I chose Olympus because... "

The prizes for the winner are;

A couple of 1GB Compact Flash cards
An Olympus RM-1 infra red wireless shutter release
An Art of Lee Miller collapsible circular reflector (48cm, or 19in, wide when open) So, there you go. Please make sure you are safe, and I hope you enjoy the challenge and capturing your images, please submit them to as many categories as you can.

The gallery for submissions and uploading your images can be found here (http://e-group.uk.net/gallery/showgallery.php/cat/616).

So, trying to keep this nice and easy... here are the simple rules:
Please only submit 1 entry per theme/category (the same image can be used in multiple categories if required)
Please complete the caption and submit it at the bottom of the same post you show your images in (i.e. this thread!!)
All your images must be posted in the e-group challenge thread here by linking them from your e-group gallery page.
All images must be a maximum of 800px on the largest side
Please submit your images by 22:00 Monday 26th May
The winner will be determined by John and Ian, and will be announced on Wednesday 28th May
Judges decision is final
If you take the challenge too seriously... don't - it's not worth it.Now get out there and find an image for each of those categories. Heck, you could even try to capture several categories in one image - how's that for forward thinking eh...:)

Enjoy!

right so all I need now is pop out Sunday morning and qickly snap a beautifull sunrise behind a church clock tower at 0400h (1/2/3/6/7) with an owl feeding her chicks (5/8) and a couple visible through the window enjoying themselves on the organ (4/9/10).

hmmm - wonder which lens I should plan on using............ ;)

One thing I think just needs some clarification - are we judging sets of pictures (do you need to do all 10) or looking for the best individual picture (and you can cherry-pick the themes)?

Ian

naively I had seen this as an assignment and assumed that the objective was to produce between 1 and 10 images allocated for 'assessment' against the 10 objectives.

something along the lines of 100 points - 10 per objective beig allocated with the usual mix of on topic/technical/artistic

but this was of course only an assumption from reading the posts...

theMusicMan

Good questions... my take on this is that you can try to enter all 10 categories if you are able to, or you might only be able to produce one stunning image in a single category. It's only a bit of fun remember, the objective of which is to get you out there (or in there if the weather is awful) using your cameras and taking shots. If I were judging the challenge (and I am :) hehe) then I'd be encouraged by seeing more categories entered than a single super image.

Does that help...?

Just a question, from somebody with scant knowledge of British traditions... what is the Bank Holiday?

The subjects are very good... as I have not touched my camera in a while, it would be good to get out and try to shoot along these criteria, and maybe even post some examples. Of course, I will not participate in the contest, but if you allow me to post something in the thread (should I actually shoot something) I would be gratefull.

Basically, we call most of our official public holidays 'Bank Holidays' because even the banks close on these days. But they aren't really 'British' as Scotland observe some different holiday dates to us in England and Wales and there are some differences in Northern Ireland too.

Great Britain = all the nations in the main island; England, Wales and Scotland.
United Kingdon = Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

An Olympus RM-1 infra red wireless shutter release
An Art of Lee Miller collapsible circular reflector (48cm, or 19in, wide when open)

A handy set of bits, but the main thing is the that the challenge is for FUN :D

Great stuff folks, I am glad you're starting to put together your collections... go for it.

I have a few (I can still take the shots yeah...:) but of course for those who might think otherwise - don't worry, I can't picj myself as the winner - I'll just enter for the fun of it:) ) but not all of them and though the weather has turned hugely for the worse this morning, am going out and about today to see how many more I can grab.

Keep enjoying yourselves folks...

Hi Shirley -

I have five and another to get at 04:00hours tomorrow morning. It is possible due to other activities, that will be it. I'm hopeful one will be good enough for the RM1 which I'm desperate for.

the same image can be used in multiple categories if required...

My twisted mind reasons that it might be theoretically possible to get all ten categories with one image. Having said that, I think you would need to be pretty lucky or work pretty hard at contriving it!

Good luck to all who are entering.

Forgive me but I am confused! I have clicked the link and uploaded my entries for the challenge to the gallery but on closer reading it appears you would like them to be posted here as well ? and also a PM to music man with the tie breaker? this is my first posting as the technology does not come easily to me so please write slowly so I can understand!!!

Hi Sue, yes, that's right. The reason I ask that you post them all to a thread in here is that you will then have all of your images in the same post and I can judge them far more easily than if I have to trawl through the gallery looking for individual images. It just makes my job easier. OK, maybe next time we can do things better, but this was very impromptu, so please forgive me and bear with us... thanks.

Can I make a suggestion?
I noticed in somebody elses thread that its possible to put a row of thumbnails in a thread, that way you could see all the pics together and click on them individually to see larger versions.
Its easy to do, click Post Reply and underneath the smilies on the right it say 'My pics' if you click on that all you images appear you simply select the ones you want and they go into the message as a row of thumb nails. Doing it any other way will involve a lot of scrolling down pages for the judges - what do you think Music man?

Use IMAGE SIZE then FILE / SAVE AS when you save as a JPEG you get a slider coming up that allows you to alter the amount of compression. Set this to about 5 and you will get a small file size and decent quality.

1 - Bank Holiday Weather: Spotted the rain running off a distant farm gate... thought... "Hmmm, that'd be a little different for the challenge..."
http://e-group.uk.net/gallery/data/616/Bank_Holiday_Weather.jpg (http://e-group.uk.net/gallery/showphoto.php/photo/5576)

6 - 04:00 in the morning!: A tricky category... and a poor entry from me to boot... Ho-hum, at least I managed to get up at this unearthly hour and see who else was online at 04:00 in the morning!! Who sets these challenges eh!!
http://e-group.uk.net/gallery/data/616/0400.jpg (http://e-group.uk.net/gallery/showphoto.php/photo/5575)

http://e-group.uk.net/gallery/data/616/Something_Cute.jpg (http://e-group.uk.net/gallery/showphoto.php/photo/5579)

9 - A Candid shot of someone, anyone but this must be... outside: Forgot I needed this one, so when it was too late I looked at the shots I took when at the Welsh HAwking Center yesterday, and thankfully I found one, but another very poor entry! At least the horse is having a nose!

Hi All

Apologies for not posting the results of the Challenge... I am here in Vienna with a very dodgy internet connection which keeps logging me out. So, I am off to Copenhagen tomorrow where hopefully I'll have a better connection and can have a final look at the entries.

Apologies for the delay... bear with me please, thanks.

Things will probably be better in Copenhagen later, and as long as I am able to get a decent connection to view the images one final time, we'll be posting the results later, thanks for being patient with us folks.

I can't do anything now as I am about to log off and catch another flight... catch you later.
