I can't work out which of these four units to get.

I can get the FL-50 in the UK NEW for 249, but I can also get a brand new USA FL-50R from a guy in Scotland for the same price but a 1yr international warranty.

I have seen used FL-50 listed on eBay and other sites from 125 to 175.

I guess the question is do I need the FL-50(R) over the FL-36(R)?

I will use it for internal shots of family and friends, but also church groups and local events and personal shots at weddings.

Cheers for any views or comments.

The words Church and Wedding make me lean towards the FL-50. It has more range and faster recycling which will help in both of those situations. Though the FL-36 is very good and in respect of features the same. So if these 2 things are important to you, fast recycle time and large range, then the FL-50 would be a good investment. And the R model might be good for creativity since you can get it cheap, and with a warranty.
All the best,
Phil

The FL-50R will allow you to use your on board flash as well as the FL-50R set up as a separate light source illuminating the subject. This can have significant obvious advantages and in effect provides you with a mini-remote/studio flash set up.

Right i think it looks like the FL-50R then unless my source has dried up the maybe I'll try and find one from Adorama or BHphoto, only trouble is there is a very good chance of customs duties.

There is. But it is worth trying arlingtoncamera.com they are very helpful both with general sales, and minimising import costs... No guarantees, but they will do all they can to reduce them for you. They are highly regarded by many on both side of the pond.

Hi

Just been on the arlingtoncamera website, their FAQ section tells us that they are not currently accepting international shipping orders, assuming that is the case, you may want to consider www.tristatecamera.com who do ship to the UK.Prices look good too:)
Hope this helps.

If your source is Kerso (Ian) then I can personally vouch for him and you won't get import duty as all his products are shipped from Fife. I am about to get 2 E-510's from him. He's a star.

Cheers ndl.

MusicMan, yep Ian is my source and yes I know he ships from Fife, thats why I always check him out first, he said he could get a FL50R for next week, but I havent had a responce to my last email regarding if that was in to him or out to me, I don't mind waiting but I can get one direct from the US by next week myself.

Just looked at Trisate, and to be fair to Kerso his price is pretty keen considering no import duties to worry about.

I will drop him a line again.

Hey Jim

I actually purchased my FL-50 from Ian several months ago. Might be looking to sell this soon and get the FL-50R as a replacement. As I said earlier in this thread, I am happy to vouch for Ian, he is reliable, quick, and a good guy to boot.

I would never hesitate to purchase from him for anything.

Going to order the FL-50R this weekend from Ian myself.

As has been said - great guy to deal with and no issues whatsoever.

A huge advantage of the FL-50 over the 36 is the ability to add the Power Grip which not ony extends the number of flashes but, more importantly for group work, sigificantly boosts recycling times.

I recently bought A Spyder 2 Pro from Ian Kerr (he's in Arbroath) and his service was excellent. I wonder how much he can do an E-3 for?
His email is Kerso1123@msn.com

he also has 2 12-60's listed on his eBay shop, but states that he can offer a better price away from eBay!

Ian Kerso (Flash Camera on eBay) sources stock from the US and he can get the FL-50R for around 249 as they cost $430 in the states.
